Calgary, AB – The University of Victoria women's field hockey team battled back to win their season opener against the University of Calgary on Sep. 12.
 
Calgary struck first.

• The Vikes were on the attack in the first quarter, but the Dinos turned away a scoring opportunity off a penalty corner. The Dinos found their footing in the second and found the back of the net on a breakaway. The Vikes trailed 1-0, a rare position for the decorated squad.

 
Victoria found their footing in the second half.

• The Vikes dominated the third quarter, controlling possession for the majority of the quarter. The Dinos' goalie stood tall, denying many scoring opportunities.
• Josie Dunham was the first of the Vikes to break through and solve the Dinos' goalie. Dunham scored the first goal of the season and tied the game at one apiece.
• Ava Winter and Katie Bentley kept the goal barrage going as the pair each scored a goal of their own just a minute apart, putting the Vikes ahead 3-1 in the blink of an eye.

 
Dinos buried one more, but it was too little, too late.

• In the final minute of the game, the Dinos scored once more off a penalty shot, narrowing the Vikes' lead to 3-2, but time was set to expire.

 
Notables:

• With the season-opening win, the Vikes start 1-0 and the Dinos 0-1.

 
Victoria will be back in action for the second game of the weekend against the Calgary Dinos tomorrow, Sep. 13, at 10 a.m.
