VICTORIA - The Vikes women's soccer team tied the Calgary Dinos 1-1 thanks to a late penalty goal scored by Victoria-native #Lindsay Hoetzel#.

First half action fell heavily in UVic favour with two most notable chances coming from forward #Jaqueline Harrison# (Whitehorse, YK) and midfielder #Jaclyn Sawicki# (Coquitlam, B.C.). Sawicki was on the end of a hard pass from the right side and from just outside the 18-yard box, took the one-time strike but the ball went wide. The Vikes maintained the majority of possession but Dinos keeper Kristen Barton was strong between the posts. The game remained scoreless at the half.

Only minutes into the second half, Dinos midfielder Andrea Nania made a great leading pass to striker Sarah Benson. Benson's shot floated in the air and Vikes keeper #Stephanie Parker# (Chemainus, B.C.) seemed to have it under control but the ball spun backwards past her gloves to give the Dinos a 1-0 lead. Momentum started to shift as the Dinos began to put pressure on with some great right side attack generated again by Nina.

In the 57th minute, the Vikes had a great opportunity that started on the left side and was played in to Sawicki in the middle of the pitch. Sawicki quickly turned and saw #Maryse Reichgeld# (North Vancouver, B.C.) over-lapping on the right side. With space ahead of her Reichgeld put a great shot on goal that Dinos keeper Barton tipped just over the net.

Midway through the second half, freshman attackers #Emma Greig# (Tofino, B.C.) and #Shannon Elder# (Victoria, B.C.) entered the game. Elder was quick to stir trouble as she got her head on the end of a cross from the right side but the ball went just wide.

A through ball fed to a streaking #Lindsay Hoetzel# (Victoria, B.C.) with less than ten minutes on the clock lead to a battle in the box and resulted in a UVic penalty shot. A Dinos defender, keeper Barton and Hoetzel were tangled in the box with Hoetzel on the ground, unable to play the ball. Hoetzel calmly took her penalty shot, placing in low and hard into the bottom left corner, tying the game 1-1.

The Vikes continued to generate attack right until the final minutes but were unable to capitalize, leaving the game drawn 1-1.
