The Vikes are currently tied with Trinity Western for second place in Canada West with a 4-2-2 record. The Vikes had last weekend off and are looking to add to their six game unbeaten streak. On Oct. 1 and Oct. 2, the Vikes played a double header against the Fraser Valley Cascades, tying them 0-0 on the road and defeating them 4-0 at home. Vikes keeper #
Elliot Mitrou# has been key in that streak after earning straight shutouts in the last four games.
The impressive unbeaten record won the men's soccer team the title of September's UVic Team of the Month as voted by the 2011-12 UVic Vikes Varsity Council, with defender #
Gavin Barrett# stealing the Male Athlete of the Month honours.
"At the beginning of the season we were hoping to be in a good position to make playoffs and now I really think we are there being tied in second place with Trinity Western," head coach #
Bruce Wilson# said.
Wilson aims to have all his veterans back in the line-up at some point this weekend. A majority of the seniors have been away from the pitch due to injury and illness but the Vikes fans will hopefully get their chance to see the talents of #
Peter Richmond#, #
Colin Wilson#, #
Daniel Kilpatrick# and #
Miguel Romeo# all together again.
The No. 8 Trinity Western Spartans are currently 4-2-2 in the Canada West after losing 1-0 in a close battle to the Canada West and CIS-leading UBC Thunderbirds. Up until the loss to UBC, the Spartans were on a six game unbeaten streak with
Spencer Schmidt leading the way with four goals and
Garrett Peters with three. Spartans have heavily relied upon keeper
Andrew Fink who has posted three shut outs in eight games.
The UBC Thunderbirds have topped the charts this week to No. 1 in the CIS after defeating the TWU Spartans last weekend 1-0. T-Birds'
Sean Haley leads the Birds with five goals to date and
Richard Meister has been key in goal posting two shutouts. Neutralizing
Jason Gill, Matt Allard and
Will Hyde will be key in competing against the powerhouse T-Birds squad as all three are backed by All-Star credentials.
