Bisons and Cougars set to face off with Vikes

Oct. 15 and 16: Uvic vs Manitoba and Regina, 12 p.m.

VICTORIA - The UVic women's soccer team are currently in fourth place in the Canada West Standings with a 4-4-2 record. The Vikes lost to both the CIS No. 3 ranked Trinity Western Spartans (1-2) and the No. 5 ranked UBC Thunderbirds (0-1) last weekend despite a solid performance from the Vikes backline and goalkeeper #Stephanie Parker#. Freshman #Emma Greig# was the only goal scorer for the UVic side last weekend after she had to compete without sister #Brigitte Greig# and team mate #Sarah Clark#, who were out due to injury.

Head coach Tracy David will be looking to sevearl veterans to lead the team this weekend. #Jaclyn Sawicki#, #Jacqueline Harrison#, #Tessa Margetts#, #Nathalie Scharf# and #Lindsay Hoetzel# have been consistent stand outs for the Vikes. The Vikes have scored 21 goals this season and they can be credited to 11 different athletes, continuing to show case the depth of David's squad. The Vikes will play the Manitoba Bisons on Oct. 15 and the Regina Cougars on Oct. 16, with both games at 12 p.m. at Centennial Stadium.

The Manitoba Bisons are currently 2-6-0 in the Canada West and are lead by 2010 Canada West Second Team All-Star Carrie Nash, in her fifth year. The Bisons were downed last weekend by UBC 0-2 and conference leading Trinity Western 4-1 to put them in 8th place in Canada West. Also key for the Bisons is Paula Fast, who was the lone goal scorer last weekend with an unassisted goal against the Trinity Western Spartans. Goalkeeper Chloe Werle has been backing Manitoba between the pipes and has totalled two shut outs in seven games.

The Regina Cougars sit at the bottom of the Canada West pool with an 0-7-1 record and are lead by head coach Bob Maltman in his fifth season. Returning fifth-year co-captain, 2010 Canada West First Team All Star and goalkeeper Michelle Anderson along with fourth-year defender Sarah Novak, defender Dana Renneberg, Jessica Meyer and Kelsey Abstreiter are also expected to be core players for the Cougars. Last weekend Regina were blanked by powerhouses Trinity Western and UBC 0-4 and 0-5, respectively.
