VICTORIA - The women's field hockey team ended their 2011 Canada West campaign Sunday with a 2-2 tie against the Calgary Dinos. Following the game, athletes from Calgary and one athlete from Victoria were honoured as Canada West All-Stars, including fifth-year Vikes keeper #
Kaitlyn Williams# (White Rock, B.C.).
Williams rightfully earned Canada West Goalkeeper of the Year honours and is the only UVic athlete to be named to the All-Star team for 2011.
The Vikes started the season with rookie keeper #
Leah Farnan# (West Vancouver, B.C.) since 2007 CIS Rookie of the Year, Williams, had national team commitments. Keeper #
Alexandra Martinuik# (Calgary, Alta.) also split duties with Farnan in the later part of the season.
During a convenient break in training, Williams was released to play four games for the Vikes - two games each against Alberta and UBC.
Of those games were the Vikes' first two wins of the season - a 1-0 win over Alberta and an impressive 3-0 win over the No. 1 T-Birds. In the four games played, Wiliams had two shutouts and only three goals against.
Williams is currently in Guadalajara, Mexico for the Pan American Games and has so far helped Canada to a victory over Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago. The Canadian contingent will enter the semi-finals this week as they aim to compete in the finals for a chance to head to the 2012 London Olympics.
Despite Williams being the only major award winner and All-Star, four senior athletes were also recognized for their contributions to the program including fifth-years
Jasleen Aujla,
Courtney Low and
Angela Buttress, as well as fourth-year
Whitney Siegmann.
The Vikes end their season with a 2-8-2 record and are now looking towards their 2012 Canada West season.
