Pandas sweep Vikes on the road

Oct. 9: Alberta 3 Uvic 0

EDMONTON - The Pandas swept the Vikes this weekend 2-1 on Saturday and a 3-0 win today. The loss on the last road game of the season means for a challenging series back home against UBC and Calgary since the Vikes now drop to 2-6 in standings.

Rookie forward Nicole Laskosky, of the Pandas, scored the game winner, scoring her second goal in as many games, while fourth-years Jackie Trautman and Kincso Santha scored only a minute apart in the second half to give the 3-0 lead. Veteran Alberta keeper Tory Spencer remained solid in net, earning her the shut out.

Vikes keeper #Leah Farnan# (West Vancouver, B.C.) was challenged early on when Edmonton native Santha forced Farnan to make an outstretched toe save in the 12th minute. The resulting scramble that followed was cleaned up by Laskosky to give the Pandas the 1-0 lead early in the first half.

Minutes later, Vikes co-captain #Whitney Siegmann# (Kelowna, B.C.) found herself all alone heading towards goal by 2009-10 Canada West Player of the Year Trautman, who was quick to close the space and prevent the Vikes from getting on the board.

Another chance for UVic came when #Kyla Kirby# (Victoria, B.C.) had a backhand shot but it was hooked wide of the Alberta net.

Early in the second half, Trautman lifted the Pandas lead by two off a penalty corner to net her third goal of the season. Laskosky quickly lifted the lead by three when she was able to find Santha to re-direct the ball on the short side in the 43rd minute.

The Vikes had their opportunities after they were awarded a series of penalty corners with 17 minutes left in the game. Unable to capitalize, the Vikes remain fourth in the Canada West Standings and will return home to play UBC and Calgary in back to back weekends beginning Oct. 15 and Oct. 16 against UBC.

The 4-2-2 Pandas will now head to Calgary to play the Dinos, who shocked the UBC Thunderbirds in today's action, climbing back from a 3-0 defecit to tie the game 4-4. The UBC Thunderbirds now sit at 5-2-1, leading the Canada West conference.
