The Alberta Golden Bears played a strong defensive game to clip the University of Victoria Vikes men's basketball team 76-59 in Edmonton on Thursday night.
With the loss, the Vikes trail the Golden Bears 1-0 in the best-of-three Canada West quarter-final series. Game 2 goes on Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. PST, and if necessary Game 3 will also be played in Edmonton on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. PST.

On Thursday night, the Vikes held a very brief lead on a #
Ryan MacKinnon# three-pointer, but the Golden Bears responded back immediately with four quick points - a lead they would never relinquish again.
Alberta took a 44-36 lead to the locker room at the half and never looked back.

Pierce Anderson# led the Vikes with 16 points on the night, while star guard MacKinnon was held to just seven.
The Vikes held Alberta star Daniel Ferguson to 2-for-13 shooting, holding him to 11 points (seven secured at the charity stripe). Jordan Baker paced the Golden Bears with a game-high 18 points and 11 rebounds.
Alberta outscored Victoria 16-4 in the paint and 21-9 off turnovers.
