Field Hockey women earn first win of season

Aug 30: UVic 3 Dartmouth 2

The Vikes women's field hockey team looked to continue their pre-season road trip in Boston on Sunday. The team was gearing up to play against Harvard but with the threat of Hurricane Irene travelling rapidly up the eastern coast, the game had to be cancelled. The Vikes spent the day indoors preparing for their next game against Dartmouth as heavy rainfall and high winds took over Boston.

The Vikes were able to continue their pre-season against Dartmouth the following day in Hanover, N.H. The Vikes came out strong in the opening minutes, earning a penalty stroke, after senior #Whitney Siegmann# (Kelowna, B.C.) was hit from behind in the circle. Defender #Kyla Kirby# (Victoria, B.C.) made no mistake on this early opportunity, giving the UVic squad the go-ahead 1-0.

Later in the first half, rookie #Marisa Davidson# (Kelowna, B.C.) teamed up with hometown teammate Siegmann to put the Vikes up 2-0. Dartmouth was able to get on the board, converting on a penalty corner, to leave the Vikes up 2-1 at half time.

In the second half, Dartmouth tied the game 2-2 on a well-executed drag flick giving them their second penalty corner goal of the game. With just over ten minutes left in the game, a quick counter up the right side of the field allowed #Stefanie Hatch# (Kelowna, B.C.) to find Davidson for her second goal of the match. The Vikes held on to give them their first pre-season win 3-2 over Dartmouth.

Fifth year #Angela Buttress# (West Vancouver, B.C.) commented, “ The game was a huge improvement from the last game. You can see that the team is becoming used to each other and used to the Vikes tactical system. We made several adaptations from the game against Yale which helped us come up with our first win of the season!”

The Vikes will be back in action Aug. 30, travelling to Cambridge, Mass. to play against Brown. [FULL SCHEDULE & RESULTS]
