Young Vikes head to Calgary for Canada West opener

Sept. 17 and 18: UVic at Calgary for Season openers

The University of Victoria Vikes will get their first taste of Canada West action this weekend playing the 2011 CIS National Championship hosts, the Calgary Dinos. The Vikes and Dinos will face off in Calgary on Sept. 17 and Sept. 18 with both games taking place at 12:00 p.m.

FULL SCHEDULE / ROSTER / SEASON PREVIEW

This opening weekend will be a good test for the young Vikes squad, following a 2-1 pre-season record in Boston, Mass. The Vikes versus Dinos double-header will be the start of a journey towards what could be Calgary's first Canada West and CIS banner in women's field hockey.

Head coach #Lynne Beecroft# is entering her 28th season and is building towards bringing home a 12th CIS field hockey banner. Rookie forward #Marisa Davidson# (Kelowna, B.C.) is expected to generate a lot of offence for the Vikes, after an impressive pre-season scoring record of four goals in three games. The midfield line will largely feature the talents of second-year speedster #Courtney Ellis# (Victoria, B.C), as well as #Chelsea Morton# (Duncan, B.C.) and rookie Emily Fisher (Unionville, Ont.)

In addition, rookie goalie #Leah Farnan# (West Vancouver, B.C.), veteran #Jasleen Aujla# (Surrey, B.C.), third-year #Carly Krestanovich# (Surrey, B.C.) and 2010 CIS All-Canadian #Kyla Kirby# (Victoria, B.C.) will be heavily relied upon to steer the Vikes' back line.

About: In 2010, Calgary did not qualify for the CIS National Championships; however, there was no shortage of Dinos present at the championship banquet. Head coach Jenn Swagar was named CIS Coach of the Year after leading the team to the program's best finish (3rd) in the Canada West since 2000. In addition, returning fifth-year midfielder Courtney Campbell was honoured as a CIS first-team all Canadian and Carolina Romeo was named to the second-team. Romeo came into the CIS as the youngest female athlete in history at the age of 15 in 2008. This year, Swagar will look to Campbell as well as the many other fifth-years including Laural Kuntz, Emma Guppy, Michelle Roydhouse, and Kaitlyn Longworth. As the 2011 National Championship hosts, Calgary will have an automatic qualification for the tournament and will be looking to hoist their first ever CIS banner.
