Rebounding Vikes look for first win at home

Sept. 24 and Sept. 25: UVic hosts Alberta for home openers at 11 a.m.

The University of Victoria Vikes will open at home Sept. 24 and Sept. 25 at 11 a.m. after returning from a tough road trip in Calgary. Looking for their first points of the season, the young UVic squad will host the Alberta Pandas who are coming off a 1-1 record against UBC last weekend.

FULL SCHEDULE / ROSTER / SEASON PREVIEW

The Vikes went 0-2 against the Dinos Sept. 17 and 18, scoring just once on a goal by rookie forward #Marisa Davidson#. Despite creating several scoring opportunities, the Vikes were unable to capitalize and return home to plan for their matches against Alberta.

Head coach #Lynne Beecroft# is entering her 28th season with her assistant coach, #Krista Thompson#, entering her 15th. The Vikes are building from their first Canada West weekend and will be looking to defensive standouts #Sam Purcell#, #Carly Krestanovich# and #Kyla Kirby# to fend off the Pandas' attacking lines.

Up front, the strengths of veteran #Courtney Low#, as well as the scoring talents of Kelowna natives Davidson and #Whitney Siegmann#, will get an opportunity to shine on home field.

With a current 0-2 record, the Vikes will be looking only forward as they aim to climb the ranks in order to qualify for the 2011 CIS National Championship being held in Calgary.

About: The Alberta Pandas boast a roster of 12 returning players from the 2010-11 squad. Despite their 1-11 record last season, the Pandas have begun their 2011 campaign strong earning three points from UBC in their home opener. The Pandas are currently 1-1 in Canada West standings and will be looking towards the leadership of fourth-year B.C. native Jackie Trautmann to guide the team towards a berth to Nationals. A mix of talent is spread across the field from veteran keeper Tory Spencer manning the backline to forward Kincso Santha, who scored the game winner against UBC last weekend. The Pandas have not won the CIS title since 2005 and will be looking to keep the banner in Alberta this year.
