Pair of goals guides Vikes to second straight road win

The University of Victoria Vikes defeated the Calgary Dinos 2-1 at the West Varsity Soccer Pitch in Calgary in Canada West women's soccer play on Sunday Sept. 25.

HTML BOX SCORE

The Vikes, who improved to 3-2-1 and move into a tie for third place in the conference with 10 points, struck early in the contest, leaving the Dinos in a catch-up position for the entire game.

#Nathalie Scharf# scored on a header that slipped past the fingertips of Dinos goalie and former Vike Kristen Barton in the 23rd minute to give UVic the early lead. Minutes later, Barton committed a foul in the penalty area, pulling down national team player #Jaclyn Sawicki# on a breakaway, which is normally a red card and automatic ejection. A penalty shot was awarded but #Carsen Machin# could not capitalize and her kick was just wide bouncing off the left goal post.

"That would have made it 2-0," said Vikes head coach #Tracy David#. "But we were up just 1-0 and in the second half, they came back with a vengeance."

"I was very pleased with our first half," David said. "And we showed some grit in the second. All in all, we're happy with the weekend."

The Dinos managed a couple of strong scoring chances, the first coming by Sarah Benson as she managed to get the ball past the Vikes defence but didn't get much on the shot, resulting in an easy save for the Vikes goalkeeper #Stephanie Parker#. Calgary had another good scoring opportunity with forward Tessa Miller's beautiful cross to Deanna Fidler, but Fidler could not manage to get a solid shot off.

The Vikes' second goal came early in the second half of play in the 49th minute when #Lindsay Hoetzel# tracked down a #Mallory Hackett# pass, putting the ball past Barton.

The lone Calgary goal came at the 67-minute mark on a breakaway by Miller. The Dinos could not manage to get the tying goal in the match with a shot by Miller and header by Benson both sailing just wide as time wound down.

The two teams will face off again next weekend, this time in Victoria at 12 p.m. on Saturday. The Vikes will also host Lethbridge next weekend, while Calgary will pay a visit to Fraser Valley.
