VICTORIA - The University of Victoria Vikes women's field hockey team were no match for the powerhouse Thunderbirds, who blanked the young UVic side 6-0 in the final conference match on Oct. 21 at UBC's Wright Field. Following the match, three Vikes were named Canada West All-Stars, while the Birds were presented their 10th consecutive conference banner.

T-Birds Cassandra Taylor, Hannah Haughn, Nat Sourisseau and Kate Gillis each got on the board in the UBC home win. Haughn notched two to bring her tally to seven for the conference, while Gillis' lone goal also brings her to tie Haughn as conference leading scorer with seven goals
Despite dropping two losses this weekend, three Vikes were named Canada West All-stars following the game including fourth-year co-captains Kyla Kirby (Victoria, BC) and Carly Krestanovich (Surrey, BC) and rookie Annie Walters-Shumka (Victoria, BC).
Central defender veteran Kirby scored twice throughout the season for the rookie-laden Vikes women's field hockey team. The Victoria-native was pivotal in controlling the Vikes' back line and generating offensive pressure.
"I'm really pleased for Kirby more because she has come in fit, as a leader and has dedicated herself to making the Vikes better this year," said Lynne Beecroft, head coach of the Vikes women's field hockey team. "She wants to perform well and has really done her homework to help lead this team. She truly wants to be here and help make a difference and she has been doing just that."
Defender Krestanovich has been a regular starter for the Vikes women's field hockey team. Krestanovich has been a holdfast for the Vikes and the team's strongest leader off the pitch.
"Carly is playing the way she knows she can and trusts what her own instincts are telling her," said Beecroft. "Her leadership off the field is tremendous and has been an important part of our team's success."
Claremont graduate Walters-Shumka has stepped in to the Vikes line up starting playing almost every minute of every pre-season, exhibition and conference game. The first-year Vike scored twice in the pre-season Boston tour and twice in the regular season.
After going 8-0-0 through out the season, UBC were awarded the top-two conference major awards including Gillis being named Player of the Year and Haughn being named Rookie of the Year. Five Birds were named to the conference All-Star team.
Calgary Dinos standout and fifth year Carolina Romeo was honoured as the Gail Wilson Outstanding Contributor nominee, while team mate Sydney Hamm was named the Calgary Dinos Goalkeeper of the Year. Dinos coach Jenn Swagar was named Canada West Coach of the Year.
Saskatchewan-native and University of Victoria Vikes men's field hockey player Tyler Klenk (Regina, Sask.) was named thhe Umpire of the Year. The second-year student-athlete has exploded on to the island umpiring scene in the last year, earning his regional umpiring certification and umpiring at the Canadian Senior national championships, the vancouver women's premier league and for his first time, the Canada West. Klenk's fitness, decision making and player-experience has helped him become one of the island's most promising umpires.
The Vikes end their regular season with a 3-4-1 record and will travel with the Thunderbirds to Toronto for the CIS championships from Nov. 1-4.
