The University of Victoria Vikes women's field hockey team suffered a 5-0 blow from the Guelph Gryphons in their opening match of the CIS women's field hockey national championship on Nov. 1 at Varsity Centre in Toronto, Ont. The Vikes women made their return appearance this year after a one-year hiatus from the national championships.

The Vikes were unable to handle OUA Rookie of the Year Allison Chute who scred three goals in the game, as well as CIS Player of the Year Brittany Seidler, who scored the additional two.
"It wasn't our most pretty game to open the tournament," said Vikes head coach
Lynne Beecroft. "The turf was definitely a factor out there for us. We couldn't keep on our feet and it was very hard to run, hard to stop and hard to cut. (Guelph) were definitely more aware of how the turf played and they had a lot of opportunity because of that. They capitalized on their opportunities and now we need to just re-group and come strong for our game against UBC."

Victoria began to press towards the end of the frame, but to no avail as the OUA silver medalist Gryphons maintained a 1-0 lead at the half.
Chute notched her second goal of the game just one minute into the second half. The first-year midfielder found herself all alone in the circle and made no mistake in finding the back of the net. She then completed the hat trick performance in the 43
rd minute when she one-timed a pass from second-year forward
Candice Hawksworth (Oakville, Ont.) past Goodmanson to find the mesh.
The young Victoria squad turned on the pressure and peppered Mitchell, Ont., native
Kaye McLagen with shots, but the fourth-year veteran goalie stood her ground.
Seidler added her named to the score sheet in the 49
th and 69
th minutes to give the third seed Gryphons the dominant five-goal advantage.
The Gryphons return to action tomorrow morning as they take on the host Toronto Varsity Blues in a rematch of the OUA final. Victoria has a quick turnaround and will face the No. 1 UBC Thunderbirds at 5:50 p.m.
