VICTORIA – The University of Victoria Vikes were defeated 72-66 by the Lethbridge Pronghorns on Nov. 30 on Ken and Kathy Shields Court in McKinnon Gymnasium. The Horns had a surge of second-half scoring to capture their fifth win of the season to improve to a 5-4 record, while the Vikes drop to 6-3.

Lethbridge had three players hit double digits including third-year Kim Veldman, who finished with 20 points and six rebounds. Guards Ali Cameron and Stephanie Inman each added 15 and 12 points, respectively.
 
For the Vikes, it was fifth-year Debbie Yeboah (Winnipeg, MB), who led the way with 23 points, six rebounds and four steals, while Cassandra Goodis (Penticton, BC) added 13 points. Jessica Renfrew (Victoria, BC) chipped in for seven points, six rebounds and two steals.
 
It was a slow start to the night for both, as both team struggled in all early attempts to score. The dead lock broke after an early foul by first-year Vike Jenna Bugiardini (Hamilton, ON). Veldman got the first point on the board for the Horns, who edged the Vikes 15-14 in the opening quarter.
 
The Vikes found their grounds opening up with a quick 5-0 run. Fifth-year Chelsea McMullen (Prince George, B.C.) made good on two casual buckets, which were followed by a three-pointer from Goodis. The Vikes held their momentum into the break with a 36-25 lead.
 
A refreshed Lethbridge found themselves on a 6-0 streak in the third to close the gap and out-score the Vikes 25-15. The Horns got their kick start thanks to an early intercept by Horns guard Ali Cameron. The Vikes took three minutes into the second half to get on the board, when Renfrew converted off a long pass from Goodis.
 
The Vikes forced two players from the visiting side to foul out in the fourth quarter but were not able to regain their scoring momentum, allowing the Horns the final 77-66 edge. The victory gives the Horns a 5-4 record, while the No. 7 Vikes drop to 6-3.
 
Tomorrow, Dec. 1, Lethbridge will travel to Vancouver to take on the UBC Thunderbirds (6-3), while the University of Victoria Vikes will play host to No. 8-ranked Calgary Dinos (8-1). Both matches will go down at 5 p.m. and will be broadcast live at http://canadawest.tv
