Keg Spring Cup Day 1 Round-up

Mar. 24: 2012 Annual Keg Spring Cup

GAME 4: Men - UVIC 0 - UFV 1

The University of Fraser Valley Cascades edged the UVic Vikes men's soccer team 1-0, thanks to a second-half goal from Cascades midfielder Dustin Wallington. The Vikes out-shot the Cascades 28-0 but were unable to capitalize.

From the opening whistle, the Vikes poured on the pressure with strong offensive presence from captain James Rhodes (Victoria, BC) and CIS National championship tournament MVP, Cam Hundal(Surrey, BC). In the 17th minute, Rhodes almost notched one but the Cascades keeper was strong between the pipes, even picking off the sure-rebound chance taken by Craig Taylor (Victoria, BC). The Vikes continued to dominate in pressure with chances coming consistently for midfield rookie Craig Gorman (Victoria, BC) and Rhodes. Hundal continued to feed balls into the six-yard-box but the Vikes were unsuccessful at getting on the board. At the half, the score remained at 0-0 with the Vikes out-shooting the Cascades 14-5.

Eager to score, both teams became more and more physical, with a yellow card caution being awarded only three minutes into the second half to Cascades' Brian Davis. Late-substitute and striker Thomas Mallette (Trail, BC), of UVic, turned up the offensive heat and combined well with Hundal. Finally, in the 80th minute, Arian Asgari's corner kick found Wallington to give Fraser Valley the 1-0 lead despite heavy momentum in UVic's favour. Only two minutes later, Hundal was given an open opportunity to tie the game but his shot was well-saved. The Vikes and Cascades exchanged several shots until the final whistle, allowing Wallington's lone goal to send Fraser Valley to the Keg Spring Cup finals against Trinity Western, Mar. 25 at 4:00 p.m.

UVIC: 0 - 0: 0
UFV: 0 -1: 1

UFV Goal Scorer: Dustin Wallington (80')

GAME 3: Women - UVIC 3 -  UBC 2

The UVic Vikes women's soccer team got on the board early in their opening game of the Keg Spring Cup against the UBC Thunderbirds. A great left foot strike by midfielder Jacqueline Harrison (Whitehorse, YK) in the 15th minute gave the Vikes the 1-0 lead before UBC's Lisa Furutani tied it up only five minutes later. Furutani picked up a loose ball and knocked a low shot past Vikes keeper Stephanie Parker (Chemainus, BC) to the tie the game 1-1. Both teams traded attempts, with most of the play happening in the midfield, resulting in a 1-1 score at the break.

In the second half, the Vikes were out-shooting the Birds and generated several attempts from the left hand side of the pitch thanks to great work from forward Lindsay Hoetzel (Victoria, BC). Hoetzel would later be rewarded when she was hauled down in the box by UBC midfielder Alisha Penev. Penev was awarded a caution and Hoetzel would finish on the penalty kick to send the Vikes up 2-1. Canada West player of the year, Janine Frazao, stirred up most of the offensive pressure for the Birds tying up the game in the 89th minute with a low chip over a diving Parker. Frazao almost had the chance to seal the win in added time but Parker was first to the ball. Immediately following, second-year midfielder Jaclyn Sawicki (Coquitlam, BC), with some neat footwork, curled one across the face of the goal from in tight but the Vikes were unable to capitalize sending the 2-2 game to penalty kicks.

The Vikes were the first shooters for the round of penalty kicks with Sawicki, Harrison and rookie Emma Greig (Tofino, BC) scoring on their first three shots. Parker stoned Frazao on UBC's first attempt and made the game-winning save on UBC's fourth shot against Kelly Cook. The Vikes would win the shootouts 3-2, which would also be the final score of the game. The Vikes now move on to the Keg Spring Cup finals tomorrow, Mar. 25 at 2:00 p.m.

GAME 2: Men - TWU 3 - UBC 3 (TWU 4 - UBC 1 PKs)

In the opening game of the Keg Spring Cup for the men, Canada West final four teams, UBC and Trinity Western, took to the field in exciting fashion. UBC forward Gagandeep Deosanjh netted four goals, three coming off penalty shots. Despite the impressive performance by Dosanjh, it was Trinity Western who prevailed with a 4-1 victory in penalty kicks, following the 3-3 regular-time score. Spartans' Brayden Gant opened the scoring in the 15th minute, firing home a shot after a great set-up by teammate Jarvis Ambaka. Both teams laid on a very physical game resulting in several cautions being awarded. Gant would net his second of the match to put the Spartans up by two just before the break.

Coming out of half-time UBC took the field with Dosanjh finishing a penalty kick in the 63rd minute, following an obstruction call in the box. The Spartans took a 3-1 lead in the 74th minute when David Malamura sent a rocket into the back of the UBC net. Following a slew of cautions including a red card, Dosanjh was given another penalty shot, this time scoring off the rebound. In the final minute of play, individual effort by Donsanjh tied the game at three sending both teams to a shootout. Trinity Western's Braden Volkenant, Brayden Gant, Mitchell Rohla and Rhys Volkenant each scored for the 4-1 penalty kick victory. Trinity Western now moves on to the final match tomorrow, Mar. 25 at 4 p.m.

GAME 1: Women - TWU 3 - ALB 0

Both the Alberta Pandas and Trinity Western Spartans took some time settle in for the first real match-up since the fall Canada West season. In the 27th minute, Rebecca Brandt sent a cross in front of the Pandas goal-mouth, where forward Jessica King was there to give the Spartans the 1-0 lead. The Spartans maintained the lead for the majority of the first half but several offensive attempts were limited by an extreme number of offside calls. Veteran Melissa Mobilio was a first-half substitute that came in and added to the Trinity Western lead. Mobilio tore through the Pandas defence on a completely solo effort. Her finish in the bottom right corner would send the Spartans 2-0 over the Pandas before the break.

In the opening of the second half, Spartans' Alisha Penev knotted a perfect ball in front of Alberta keeper, Kelti Biggs, but Rachel Antoniuk's head found the ball first to send the Spartans up 3-0. That score would stand despite a few back-and-forth chances late in the second half. The Pandas put on good offensive pressure in the final minutes of the game almost matching Trinity Western's 17 shots with 15 of their own. The final score was 3-0 for Trinity Western. Trinity Western now moves on to the final match tomorrow, Mar. 25 at 2 p.m.
