VICTORIA, B.C. - In light of the senior Canadian women's soccer team's heartbreak loss in the Olympic semifinal to the United States, the Under-20 women's team will be a favourite at the upcoming FIFA Under-20 Women's World Cup. The Canadian Soccer Association announced the 21-membered team that will travel to Japan Aug. 19 to Sept. 8 and that list included University of Victoria Vikes women's soccer midfielder #

The FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup will take place across five cities throughout Japan with Canada stacking up against Argentina, Norway and Korea DPR in the group phase. Canada's first two matches on Aug. 20 (Argentina) and Aug. 23 (Norway) are in Kobe, while Canada's third group match on Aug. 27 is in Saitama.
Sawicki, a 2011-12 CIS All-Canadian, will miss both of the Vikes women's soccer team's home openers, set for Sept. 7 and 8 at Centennial Stadium. The Vikes women will face Alberta and newly-joined Canada West member Mount Royal confidently without midfielder Sawicki, knowing that bigger prizes are on the line in November. The Vikes will host the CIS women's soccer national championship from Nov. 8-11 at Centennial Stadium and much will be on the line as the Vikes earn an automatic berth as hosts.
In the meantime, Sawicki and the U-20 Canadian side will compete in the U-20 World Cup thanks to their silver-medal qualifying performance this year at the U-20 CONCACAF championship in Panama.
This year will mark Canada's fifth participation at the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup. Canada won FIFA silver at the inaugural event, hosted in Canada, in 2002 and also brags gold medal performances in qualifying tournaments in 2004 and 2008.
In 2014, the FIFA U-20 World Cup will return to Canada.
