Undefeated Vikes women host Wesmen, Bisons

Sept. 28: Winnipeg at UVic, Sept. 29: Manitoba at UVic (5 p.m., Centennial Stadium)

VICTORIA, B.C. - The University of Victoria Vikes women's soccer team cracked the CIS top-10 list this week in the polls and will host the Winnipeg Wesmen and Manitoba Bisons at 5 p.m. at Centennial Stadium, Sept. 28-29. The Vikes women are currently third in the Canada West standings with a 4-0-1 record.

FULL SCHEDULE  /  STANDINGS

The Vikes women enter this weekend ranked No. 8 in the CIS, the first time in over two years that the team has made it into the top-10. Despite having an automatic berth to the 2012 national championship as hosts, the UVic women are on track to validating their spot at the championship.

"We have been on the road for the past two weeks and are definitely looking forward to playing at home this weekend," said #Tracy David#, head coach of the Vikes women. "We haven't allowed a goal in four games now and I believe that we just need to keep on that trend. To win a championship you need good defence that plays as a unit and doesn't allow goals. If we do that, it only takes one goal to win the game."

In each of their opening Canada West games, the Vikes women have been able to start a number of fresh legs after the half time break and have seen little drop in momentum and intensity. Second-year Emma Greig (Tofino, BC) has netted eight goals this season and has done so coming off the bench in several cases. As well, rookie Sarah Douglas (London, ONT), midfielders Lindsay Hoetzel (Victoria, BC) and Mallory Hackett (Victoria, BC) have also been valuable contributors on the field.

"We have a lot of depth on the team this year," said David about often starting a fresh line up at the second half of each game. "It is interesting to see that the level of play doesn't change that much even when we put on a lot of subs. I have the utmost faith in this group and they seem to really believe in each other and I think we can really go places with a team like that."

The Vikes will face 2012 Canada West addition, the Winnipeg Wesmen, who are currently 0-5-1, as well as the Manitoba Bisons, who are 2-4-0.

Both games will kick off at Centennial Stadium on Sept. 28 and 29 at 5 p.m and will be broadcast live at http://uvic.canadawest.tv
