Stokes scores his seventh as Vikes draw No. 8 Huskies

Oct. 12: Victoria 2 – Saskatchewan 2 (Potash Corp Park – Saskatoon, Sask.)

VICTORIA – The No. 10 University of Victoria Vikes men's soccer team drew 2-2 on Oct. 12 with Prairie Division leaders and No. 8-ranked Saskatchewan Huskies in Saskatoon, Sask. Fall prairie weather cooperate for both teams as the Vikes are now 6-2-1, while the Huskies concede their first tie and are 7-3-1.

BOX SCORE

The Vikes needed the scoring touch of both Cam's on the team today as Cam Hundal notched his fifth of the season to tie the game at one, while leading Vikes goal scorer Cameron Stokes grabbed his seventh of the season to give the Vikes the lead late in the game. Senior Elliot Mitrou contributed with five saves in the match.

For the Huskies, Brett Levis opened the scoring, tallying his seventh of the season to tie Stokes for second place in Canada West scoring. Garrett Peters converted in the 85th minute to tie the game at two, while keeper Michal Bandula put up seven saves on 16 Victoria shots.

"We had a really good team performance today on a very big field," said Vikes head coach Bruce Wilson. "We are very fortunate with the great weather we had here in Saskatchewan for the time of year. It was very ideal conditions for soccer."

The Vikes dominated offensively in the open frame putting eight shots and earning four corner kicks in the opening 20 minutes of play. Both keepers were tested early as Saskatchewan's Brandon Holmes fired a shot on target in the 6th minute while less than 30 seconds later a Craig Taylor header put Bandula to work.

The Huskies earned the go-ahead goal from third-year striker Levis at the 29-minute mark. Levis, a 2012 CIS Second Team All-Canadian, beat Mitrou to give the Huskies the 1-0 go-ahead.

The Vikes responded in the 44th minute after Hundal cut the ball inside and side-footed the ball past Bandula to tie the game 1-1 entering the break.

In the second frame the Vikes continued to pressure the Saskatchewan back line and were rewarded in the 66th minute. Stokes beat his defender on the left side of the field and got to the edge of the box before sending the ball in on goal. Forward Craig Gorman looked like he was about to deflect the ball, causing Huskie keeper Bandula to delay his dive, before letting the ball bounce into the bottom right corner lifting the Vikes 2-1.

In the 72nd minute the Huskies had a glorious opportunity as Peters beat a charging Mitrou to a loose ball on the left side. Peters sent a cross to Taylor Evernden in front, with no keeper in the net, but two Victoria defenders converged on Evernden before he could get to the ball that ending up rolling out the back.

Just before the Huskies tied the match at two, Sam Prette sent a hard shot on net from outside of the box that Bandula was able to get a piece of, deflecting it high. The Vikes had another chance to score in added time earning back-to-back corners, but could not convert on either.

The Huskies came back to tie the game off a Peters header in the 85th minute that stemmed from Luigi Bekwayo. Peters goal was the finally tally of the match that resulted in a 2-2 draw between two CIS top-10 teams.

The Vikes are now 6-2-1, 11 points back of Pacific Division leaders the UBC Thunderbirds, while the Huskies maintain top of the Prairie Division with 22 points and a 7-3-1 record. Up next the Vikes will travel to Edmonton to face the Alberta Golden Bears, Oct. 13 at 1:00 pm PST while the Huskies will host the Cascades at 1:15 pm.
