Vikes find late scoring touch to down Dinos

Oct. 12: Victoria 3 - Calgary 1 (Victoria, B.C.)

VICTORIA - The University of Victoria Vikes women's field hockey team needed all 70 minutes to find their scoring touch as they downed the Calgary Dinos 3-1 in Canada West play on Oct. 12 at UVic's field hockey turf. The Vikes scored two goals in the last 10 minutes of play to advance their record to 3-0-1, while the Dinos now drop 0-7-0.

MATCH SHEET

The Vikes received goals from three different scorers including the opening goal from Amanda Watson and second-half tallies from Kayleen van der Ree and Alanna Macdonald.

For the Dinos, captain Keara Chicquen was the lone goal scorer capitalizing on Calgary's only chance of the game, while rookie keeper Joanne Wudrich made a number of key saves to frustrate the Vikes front line.

"I thought we started out like a house on fire and could have been up two or three nothing in the first five minutes," said Vikes head coach Lynne Beecroft, whose team had 45 minutes of play between their first and second goals."Calgary has nothing to lose and they made it 1-1, which put more pressure on us. It was good because we may face that situation at nationals and we know we can come back from that."

The Vikes opened generating several rushes towards goal and generated four penalty corners in the opening frame. The Dinos back line quarter-backed by Lindsay Koch and Courtney Duggan were a strong presence while Wudrich came up big from point-blank range.

Possession was heavily tilted in favour of the home side but the Vikes struggled to generate clear-cut chances. In the 15th minute the Vikes did manage to grab the lead after Andrea Jones took a quick self-start from the hash marks straight into the circle. Jones fed the ball towards goal and Watson was able to get the final touch on it to give the Vikes the 1-0 advantage.

Calgary stepped up their half court press and were the direct beneficiaries as only six minutes later they got on the board. A quick a self-start pass freed up Chicquen to walk the ball in the circle from the left side. The fifth-year striker had all the time she needed to blast the ball straight through the legs of Victoria keeper Sheriden Goodmanson.

The Dinos rode the wave of their momentum, frustrating the Vikes to a 1-1 half time score.

In the second frame the Vikes generated several chances with some good distributing out of the backfield from MacDonald and fourth year Alexis Veljacic. With the Dinos hemmed in their end the Vikes transferred the ball to Macdonald in the middle of the pitch and the third-year defender walked the ball up another 10 yards and blasted the ball towards goal. Van der Ree got a stick on the ball before it redirected up off a Calgary body and straight into the net for a 2-1 lead to the home team.

The Vikes added another in the 65th minute on a penalty corner, their 11th of the match. The ball was pulled short by Macdonald to Katlhleen Leahy who sent it back to Macdonald on the baseline. The Vancovuer native showed good patience and sent a hard push near side past Wudrich to lift the Vikes up by two.

The final score was 3-1 for the Vikes who now improve 3-0-1 while the Dinos are still on the hunt for their first win at 0-7-0. Up next the Vikes and Dinos will go head-to-head again tomorrow, Oct. 13, at 11 a.m. The game will be broadcast live at http://canadawest.tv
