Vikes rally through fog, roll over Horns

Oct. 18: Victoria 4 – Lethbridge 0 (Centennial Stadium – Victoria, B.C.)

VICTORIA – Three first half goals powered the University of Victoria Vikes men's soccer team to a 4-0 win over the Lethbridge Pronghorns on Oct. 18 at Centennial Stadium. Heavy fog made conditions difficult for both teams but the win now lifts the Vikes 7-3-1 in the Canada West, while the Horns drop to 2-9-1.

BOX SCORE

Four different Vikes scored including Cameron Stokes scoring his eighth of the season while midfielders Craig Gorman and Kurt Macaulay each notched their fifth. Also getting on the board was Sam Prette for his third of the year while senior keeper Elliot Mitrou picked up the clean sheet.

The Horns were silenced early allowing two goals in the first ten minutes of play despite some solid defensive work from Scott Slomp. Keeper Tyler Boast logged the majority of the minutes making eight saves despite allowing four as the Vikes out-shot Lethbridge 25-2.

The Vikes wasted no time getting on the board as Stokes set up Gorman for the game-winner in the ninth minute of play. Less than two minutes later, defender Andrew Ravenhill succeeded in finding Stokes to lift the Vikes up by two.

At the 23rd minute mark, Prette notched the Vikes third goal with the assist being credited to eventual Victoria game MVP Dominic Colantonio.

With 10 minutes remaining in the first frame, Lethbridge's Shlomo Swan-Azmon was sent off the pitch with a red card following a hard challenge on Vikes keeper Mitrou. Mitrou was down for a few minutes to regroup but managed to stay in the game to finish it out.

The Vikes enjoyed the wealth of a home bench rolling in seven half-time substitutions in order to rest several regular starters. Macaulay tallied in the 65th minute to push the Vikes up by four.

Macaulay's finish stood as the final goal of the match as the Vikes handled the Horns 4-0 in the first game of their double-header hosting weekend. Tomorrow the Vikes will host the Calgary Dinos at 7:15 p.m. at Centennial Stadium. The game will be broadcast live at http://canadawest.tv
