Vikes conquer Knights with fourth-quarter comeback

Oct. 26: Victoria 84 - Warner Pacific 74 (McKinnon Gym – Victoria, B.C.)

VICTORIA - The University of Victoria Vikes had an outstanding fourth quarter of shooting to defeat the visiting Warner Pacific Knights 84-74 on Oct. 26 in pre-season exhibition at McKinnon Gym. The Vikes were catch up through the second and third frames but came back thanks to double-digit scoring from Jenna Bugiardini and Shaylyn Crisp.

BOX SCORE

Bugiardini added a season-high 27 points in the game as well as nine rebounds, while third-year Crisp had 17 points and made good on three distance shots. Jenny Lewis was also in double digits with 14 points, while Cassandra Goodis tallied a game-high 15 assists. The Vikes were 47.6 per cent from the field.

The Knights were lead by fourth year guard Janelle Weiss who had a 19-point game and was all over the floor logging 33 minutes. Jordan Wilcox added 12 points in the game, while Warner Pacific was 85.7 per cent from the line.

"Jenna and Shayln have been such consistent performers for us so far and they showed their confidence again tonight," said Dani Sinclair, Vikes women's basketball head coach. "Cassandra was a big presence and ran the floor really well for us tonight and Jenna Krug came off the bench to spark the huge momentum turn in the second half."

The Vikes edged the Portland visitors 20-18 in the first quarter. The Vikes stayed on pace with the speedy Knights as Allison Mulock made good on her first three-point attempt to lift the Vikes 10-9 midway through the quarter.  Jessica Thoens responded with a long-range shot of her own to give the visitors the lead again. Back-and-forth scoring continued as Bugiardini claimed eight of the Vikes'  20 points.

In the second frame it was all Warner Pacific as Lisa Chiem came off the bench to add four key points. Crisp added six second-quarter points for the home team including a clutch three-pointer from the baseline after Jenny Lewis' cross-over set her up. Five-foot-five Weiss continued to dominate the floor as the Knights took the second quarter scoring 18-13 to take a 36-33 lead entering the break.

The Vikes were forced to play catch up for the entire third quarter and did just that with six points from each of Crisp and Jenna Krug. Weiss continued to keep the Knights in check draining an important trey and totally seven third-quarter points to lift the visitors by as much as nine. The Vikes won the war under the boards though chipping in for five buckets from inside the paint to trail 61-56 entering the final quarter.

The fourth quarter was where all the magic happened for the home team as the score was tied twice and the Vikes came back from a huge defecit. Bugiardini started the damage with 12 fourth-quarter points while six-foot-three Sarah Semeniuk added six of her own. Bugiardini drained her final foul throw of the game to make good on a three-point play while Lewis nailed a three with 12 second to go to seal the 84-74 win for the Vikes.
