Vancouver – Down one late in the game, the Saskatchewan Huskies responded with two unanswered goals to advance to Sunday's Canada West Final defeating the Victoria Vikes 2-1 in extra time. With the win, the Huskies automatically clinch a birth to the CIS national soccer championships for the first time in program history.
"It's massive," added Saskatchewan Head Coach Bryce Chapman. "The team stuck in there the first half, you could tell we were a bit on our heels but we didn't let the game get away from us playing a great second half and solid in extra time."
Craig Gorman opened up the scoring for the Vikes in the 21st minute heading in his first of the playoffs. The play was set up by Andrew Ravenhill courtesy a booming free kick into the penalty area redirected by a Cam Hundal header, both of whom collected the assists.
The game remained in Victoria's favour until late in the second half when the Huskies tied the game with eight minutes remaining. Bobbi Nicholat provided the equalizer for the Huskies in the 82nd minute squeaking one by Elliot Mitrou from a sharp angle forcing the game into extra time.
It didn't take long for the Huskies to pull ahead as Brett Levis scored what proved to be the winner for Saskatchewan. After a brutal giveaway in front of the Vikes net, Levis made no mistake capitalizing on the mistake burying his first of the playoffs in the 93rd minute.
Desperate for the equalizer, Victoria applied pressure late but failed to muster many quality-scoring chances, as the game got scrappy. Victoria was assessed two yellow cards and a red as the final whistle blew while Saskatchewan picked up a single yellow, as well.
"We never really panicked even when we were down one late in the match," said Chapman. "That's the team, we've battled back on a number of occasions during the season, we have a good group of guys with a lot of character."
Saskatchewan's Michal Bandula finished with 10 saves in the victory, while his counterparty, Victoria's Mitrou finished the night with three.
Coach Chapman was thrilled with the team's opportunity to play not only in the Canada West Final Sunday but an opportunity to compete for the national title.
"This will be our first national tournament in school history and I know the guys are excited for that. We have another good matchup Sunday against one of two quality teams and we want that Canada West banner, that was the goal from day one."
With the win, the Huskies will play the winner of the second semi-final game between Fraser Valley and UBC in the Canada West Final, set for Sunday at 1 p.m. at David Sidoo Field. The Huskies best previous finish at the Canada West Championships was a silver-medal in 2010, a feat Saskatchewan will look to better come Sunday.
The Victoria Vikes will play the loser of the second semi-final game for the bronze medal on Sunday at 11 a.m. at David Sidoo Field.Â
