Vikes victorious as Heat lose battle in the paint

Nov. 15: Victoria 89 - UBC Okanagan 75 (Kelowna, B.C.)

KELOWNA, B.C. - The University of Victoria Vikes women's basketball team came out on top 89-75 on Nov. 15 against the UBC Okanagan Heat in Kelowna, B.C. The Vikes improve their record to 2-3, while the Heat now fall 1-4 in the Canada West.

BOX SCORE

A Jessica Jazdarehee (Coquitlam, BC) lay-up rimmed out at the buzzer of the fourth quarter and that would tell the story of the matchup as the visiting Victoria Vikes who took game one of the double-header weekend.

The Heat did a good job containing the Victoria bigs for most of the first quarter but forward Sarah Semeniuk eventually ate up the Heat down in the post, taking up all rebounds and converting their touches at the basket. Semeniuk finished the night with 14 points and 7 rebounds.

The biggest thorn in the Heat's side was the backcourt duo of fourth year Jessica Renfrew and second year Jenna Bugiardini, who combined for 37 points and used pin-point passing on the break for easy buckets.

Down the stretch of the game the Heat tried to apply a full-court pressure defense that succeed in forcing crucial turnovers to try and recover from a twenty-plus point deficit during the third quarter, but they continued to turn the ball over and couldn't finish many layups at the net, culminating in a an uphill battle that would be too much.

Third-year guard Emily Kanester (Vernon, BC) led the charge for the Heat tonight with 19 points and 5 rebounds in 30 minutes of floor-time. Kanester was 6-9 from the field including 3-4 from the three-point line.

The Heat will move to 1-4 while the Vikes improve to 2-3 for the season.

The Heat will look for revenge tomorrow night in the second of back-to-back with the Vikes. Tip-off is at 5 p.m. at the UBC Okanagan gymnasium.
