Vikes downed by Cougars, split opening weekend

Nov. 2: Victoria 65 - Regina 84 (Victoria, B.C.)

The University of Regina's women's basketball team fell behind early, but recovered for a comfortable 84-65 win over the Victoria Vikes Nov. 2 in a Canada West game at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

The Vikes scored the last seven points of the first quarter to take an eight-point lead after the opening period, but the Cougars scored eight straight points of their own to open the second and then took control of the contest with a huge 16-1 run. The U of R had another 10-0 run early in the third quarter and never looked back, cruising down the stretch to earn its second win in as many nights to open the Canada West schedule.

Nicole Clarke had a huge game for the Cougars, going 4-for-5 from three-point land and leading all scorers with 24 points while tying Jennilea Coppola and Alyssia Kajati for the team lead with seven rebounds. Madi Docherty had a team-high six assists for the U of R, while Charlotte Kot had 14 points, Megan Chamberlin scored 13, and Katie Polischuk added 12.

Led by Clarke and Polischuk, the Cougars were deadly from long range all game long as they ended up shooting 11-for-18 as a team from beyond the arc.

Cassandra Goodis had 18 points and 10 rebounds to lead Victoria with a double-double. Sarah Semeniuk added 10 points for the Vikes, who fall to 1-1 on the season and will now prepare for their Canada West home openers next weekend against Fraser Valley.

The Cougars (2-0) will hit the road next weekend for a pair of games against Alberta, which was ranked No. 2 in the first CIS Top Ten poll of the season. The Pandas started out the conference schedule on Friday night with a 62-43 road win over UBC Okanagan and will try to match the U of R's 2-0 start on Saturday night at Thompson Rivers.

The Vikes will host the Fraser Valley Cascades, Nov. 8-9, for a double-header weekend, also Victoria's home operners. Both games will be broadcast live at http://canadawest.tv
