Vikes to race in 39th Elk Lake Spring Regatta

Mar. 2-3: UVic Vikes women’s rowing team at Elk Lake Spring Regatta (Saanich, B.C.)

VICTORIA, B.C. – In one of the biggest local rowing events of the year, the University of Victoria women's rowing team are hitting the water to race in the 39th Elk Lake Spring Regatta, Mar. 2-3 at Elk Lake.

REGATTA INFORMATION

The Elk Lake Spring Regatta is one of the few events that includes rowers from as young as 13 all the way to those competing in the master's division. When all is said and done, there will have been close to 1,000 competitors racing through the waters of Elk Lake.

“This event is generally a good one to measure where the program's at for this time of year,” said head coach of the women's rowing team, Rick Crawley. “It's a pretty early event so we'll use this time to figure out what we need to work on going forward.”

In a field of so many boats, getting through to the finals will be one of the challenges facing the UVic women. Competing for the Vikes in the lightweight singles is third-year standout Emily Garry (Victoria, B.C.) and in the lightweight doubles Garry will pair up with Alex Meicklejohn.

In the open pairs the two boats of Madeline Spangehl (White Rock, BC) and Stefanie Miklosovic (Yellowknife, NWT) and Rebecca Zimmerman and Renae Barks (Regina, SK) are looking to make an impact while the top fours crew of Spangehl, Jillian Legare (Campbell River, BC), Zimmerman and McCormick, coxed by Megan Smith (Vancouver, BC), will certainly be amongst the top contenders jockeying for top spot.

The women's eights competition is shaping up to be a good battle between the Vikes and cross-water rivals the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds.

Next up for the University of Victoria Vikes women's rowing team is their annual race against the University of Oregon Beavers in a long-standing friendly rivalry that goes back over 30 years. This year's competition takes place Mar. 9-10.
