VICTORIA – The University of Victoria Vikes men's soccer team commanded their way to a 4-2 victory over the Winnipeg Wesmen in Canada West soccer action on Sept. 13 in Winnipeg, Man. Two Vikes tallied their second of the season, while Cam Hundal notched his third to lift the Vikes to a 2-1-0 record, while the Wesmen drop 1-3-1.

Victoria out-shot the home side 17-5 and totaled three first-half goals from Cam Stokes, Craig Gorman and Hundal. Dominic Colantonio was the lone second-half goal scorer that gave the Vikes the 4-0 lead. The Wesmen scored two late goals including a penalty kick by Scot Answell and an 85th-minute tally by Ross Pinhammer.

The Vikes opened the scoring in the 13th minute after a hard run down the right side that was crossed low by Sam Prette for Stokes to touch in at the far post. Gorman put the Vikes up by two in the 23rd minute with Stokes picking up the assist.

Possession tilted heavily in Victoria's favour, as both Gorman and defender Andrew Ravenhill had promising shots that just flew wide of the net. Just after the near misses, Hundal scored his third of the season with Gorman picking up the assist as the Vikes entered the break with a 3-0 lead.

In the second half, head coach Bruce Wilson utilized the depth of his bench, resting Hundal, Gorman and Toshi Hayashi, allowing playing time for Bobby Eng, Kurt Macaulay and Paulo Dait.

Colantonio got on the board unassisted in the 69th minute to give the Vikes four unanswered goals in the game. Against the flow the Wesmen were awarded a penalty kick, which was finished by Ansell in the 74th minute. The Vikes bounced back with back-to-back shots from Macaulay but Pinhammer gave the home team a glimpse of a come back with his 86th minute tally.

The Wesmen were too little, too late as the Vikes' first four goals were enough to seal the 4-2 victory to advance 2-1-0 in the Pacific Division. The Vikes will travel to Calgary on Sunday, Sept. 15, to face Mount Royal. The game will be streamed live at uvic.canadawest.tv.
