Box Score SASKATOON, Sask. – Following yesterday's elimination from CIS qualification, the University of Victoria Vikes men's soccer team fell short again, 2-1, to the UBC Thunderbirds in the Canada West bronze-medal game on Nov. 1 in Saskatoon, Sask. It was the final Canada West game for eight graduating Vikes players.
Thunderbird Alex Orasa scored the game-winning goal in the 87
th minute on a rush up the field. After his initial shot was stopped by Canada West First Team All-Star keeper
Noah Pawlowski, Orasa got a foot on the rebound and sent it into the net for the win.
It was a scoreless opening half that saw the two BC rivals pretty much square in stats. The stats edged the Vikes for the first 45 minutes as Victoria had eight shots and three corner kicks, while the 'Birds had six shots and two corners. Throughout the game UBC was also given three yellow card cautions, while Victoria conceded eight fouls to the T-Birds' seven.
Victoria had initially taken the lead on a UBC own goal. After a scramble in front of the net, the ball trickled into the goal off a Thunderbird defender in the 51
st minute.
UBC tied the game 20 minutes later when Jules Chopin dribbled through a Vikes crowd and shot the ball into the bottom right corner, tying the game 1-1.
Pawlowski finished the match making six saves for the Vikes in the loss, while Richard Meister made two saves in his 45 minutes of play for UBC. Chris Beck stopped one in his 45 minutes.
It is the 10
th straight year that the Thunderbirds have medaled at the Canada West Championship tournament.
The Vikes will regroup for next season but they will have to do it without
