Vikes draw Califonia series with win over Biola

Dec. 30: Victoria Vikes 59, Biola 58 (La Mirada, Calif.)

VICTORIA, B.C. - The University of Victoria Vikes women's basketball team bounced back from their loss just one night previous in their California exhibition series. On Dec. 30 the Vikes women dropped the Biola Eagles, 59-58, in La Mirada, Calif. thanks to three made free throws in the last 30 seconds of the game.

The Vikes were led by fifth-year forward Jessica Renfrew who finished with 22 points in 32 minutes played, while Jenna Bugiardini had nine points and four rebounds and was perfect from the line. Cassandra Goodis logged six assists and nine rebounds as Victoria shot just 39 per cent from the field but 78 per cent from the line.

The Eagles had two players in double digits including Annie Park with a team-high 18 points and Elizabeth Munger who had 15 points and 11 rebounds. Chelsea Hill hauled down 13 boards and finished with nine points. Park was also 4-for-9 from beyond the arc and played 35 minutes.

In the opening half it was Victoria who trailed, 32-21, after the Eagles capitalized on Vikes turnovers for 11 points and earned nine from second-chance opportunities. Renfrew led the way with nine first-half points, while the Vikes shot 32 per cent from the field. On the other hand, Biola's Park got out in front quick missing just two attempts to near perfect with 13 first-half points, nine from three-point shots.

In the second half the Vikes did their due diligence to complete a comeback, out-scoring the Eagles 38-26. Renfrew nabbed 13 points, while Bugiardini buried nine of her own. For Biola, Munger dropped nine points, while Park drained another trey to put up five second-half points.

The game came down to the final minute as a series of free throws from Bugiardini and one final one from Shaylyn Crisp put the Vikes up by one for the win.

Up next the Vikes will return home to prepare for their Canada West match ups against Manitoba, Jan. 9-10, in Winnipeg. Those games will be streamed live at canadawest.tv.
