VICTORIA, B.C. - The University of Victoria Vikes women's field hockey team found their second win in as many games after beating the Calgary Dinos 1-0 at Hawkings Field on Sept. 14. Less five goals from yesterdays shut out, the Vikes had difficulties converting on mulitple penalty corner options but nonetheless start their season with a 2-0-0 record. The young Dinos drop to 0-2-0 in the Canada West.
One goal was all that was needed for today's three points and it was credited to
Alexis Veljacic in the seventh minute of play. The Coquitlam, B.C. native is the only fifth year on the team and the penalty-corner finish is the first goal for the senior defender in all five seasons playing with the Vikes.
"We scored on early on a penatly corner by Lexi and it was nice to see her score her first goal," said Vikes head coach
Lynne Beecroft. "It fits our theme of not relying on any one person to score goals. We weren't able to get many past their goal keeper today and we definitely have some work to do on penalty corners."
The visiting Vikes had upward of 15 penalty corner opportunities that were squandered away by the Calgary goalkeeping of Alicia Frisch, who is a fourth-year transfer from the University of Maine. The Dinos packed the circle making the congested space difficult for the Vikes to create chances. Regardless, the Vikes were unable to capitalize on their penalty corners leaving Veljacic's goal the game winner.
"They played a little more defensive today with almost all 11 players always in the 25-yard area," described Beecroft. "We definitely had our work cut out for us but overall it's still a really good start. I'm pleased with the result, two wins, and I know we will have to come home and do some more work before we play UBC."
The Vikes will travel to Vancouver to play the defending CIS champions, the UBC Thunderbirds, who also turnover a lot of players. The T-Birds Vikes double-header will happen on Sept. 20-21 with both games being played at 1:00 p.m. Pacific Time. Meanwhile, the Dinos will take a weekend off before turning around to host the Thunderbirds on Sept. 27-28. The three-team conference will continue their home-away series until the CIS National Championship set in Toronto, Ont. for Oct. 30 to Nov. 2.
