VICTORIA, B.C. - The University of Victoria Vikes men's soccer team face stiff competition in the Trinity Western Spartans and Fraser Valley Cascades for their final homestand of the 2015 Canada West regular season. The Vikes have the chance to finish as high as second in the Canada West Pacific Division standings pending this weekend's results. The Vikes are 4-3-3 on the season and are coming off a disappointing weekend that included a 0-0 draw with the UBC Okanagan Heat and 4-2 loss against the Thompson Rivers WolfPack.
The loss to the WolfPack only makes things tighter in the race for the final placings in the Pacific Division playoff picture. The Vikes, Spartans and Cascades all have the opportunity to finish anywhere between second and fourth -- ultimately determining who hosts the No. 3 and No. 4 teams in the Prairie Division or who goes on the road to the No. 1 and No. 2 teams from the prairies.
The Vikes travelled to Langley and Abbotsford Sept. 18-19 for dates with the Spartans and Cascades, taking a 1-0 win over Fraser Valley and a 2-1 loss to Trinity Western. That was earlier in the season, but this time the teams meet for a second time with playoff seedings as the major prize.
A clean sweep of this weekend's fixtures would put the Vikes into second place, pending Trinity Western and Fraser Valley results against the T-Birds. The Vikes can finish as low as fourth, with hosting honours going to the top two teams in each division.
The UBC Thunderbirds have already secured the top spot in the division with 28 points and an undefeated record through 12 games of 9-0-1. The Vikes were the only team to take a point from their mainland rivals -- a 1-1 draw in the opening game of the season on Sept. 5 in Vancouver.
For the Vikes, last weekend's results on Oct. 17-18 will fall as missed opportunities in winnable games. The Vikes to took one point out of a possible six against the fifth and sixth-place teams in the Pacific Division. Vikes men's soccer head coach
Bruce Wilson communicated that there's still a lot on the line for every team in this league, and every game is going to be a battle.
"It's just one of those examples that helps show that in this league there are no easy teams," said Wilson of the competition in the CIS. "That's the bottom line."
The Vikes were first-hand witnesses to that very idea this past weekend as the results create a lot of tension in the Pacific Division as teams fight for the best seeding possible. Veterans such as fifth years
Cam Hundal and
Craig Gorman will be called upon to help bring the Vikes back to Centennial Stadium for a playoff clash bolstered by the home field advantage.
