VICTORIA, B.C. – The University of Victoria Vikes men's basketball team found victory in their third pre-season game of the Guy Vetrie Memorial Tournament on Oct. 4. The Vikes ousted the visiting Fraser Valley Cascades 76-49 to wrap up their 2015 debut with a 1-2 record.

The Vikes were in scoring by fourth year Mack Roth who logged 17 points, nine of which came off three-point shots. It was scoring by committee as Justin Kinnear, Hassan Abdullahi, Grant Sitton, Kai Greene and Hayden Lejeune each had seven points.
 
The Cascades, without their weekend's top scorers, allowed others to step up to the plate including first year Antonio Jhuty and second year Matt Cooley who finished with nine and eight points, respectively. Fourth-year guard and former Vike Vijay Dhillon had seven points in the game.
 
It was a quiet opening half as the cascades were held to single-digit scoring in each quarter likely due to the absence of their top scorers Kevon Parchment and Nate Brown. The Vikes on the other hand started off with an eight-point quarter from Roth including two three-point shots. Reiner Theil also hit a three in the opening quarter as the Vikes led 13-9 after the first 10 minutes.
 
The second quarter saw no scoring for over three minutes until Roth was able to hit from distance for this third three, while Hassan Abdullahi and Kai Greene also joined the perimeter party. Both teams struggled to find the hoop, while the Vikes out-rebounded the Cascades 23-16. Fraser Valley shot 24 per cent from the field and had baskets coming from all but one player who stepped on the court. Roth finished the half with 13 points for the home side. Victoria grabbed a 30-18 lead at half time.
 
 The Vikes continued to show their strengths from the outside as Brandon Dunlop opened followed a Roth jumper early in the third to give the Vikes a 35-18 lead. Jhuty replied with a three of his own while the Vikes benefitted from Justin Kinnear's work under the hoop. Kinnear was effective in both ends, as the six-foot-five forward drove the hoop and sunk from the line on an and-one play to boost the Vikes 40-25. Fraser Valley struggled to find rhythm despite only being out-scored 25-18 in the quarter.
 
Vikes newcomers Tyus Barfoot, Taylor Montgomery-Stinson and Joshua Charles each got on the board to help the home side earn 40 points off the bench. The Cascades continued to struggle transitioning up the floor, giving up 10 points on turnovers and losing the rebounding war 40-18. The Vikes continued their first-half trend all the way to a 76-49 victory, their first on the new CARSA performance gym floor.
