VICTORIA, B.C. – The University of Victoria Vikes women's basketball team were defeated by the CIS No. 2-ranked Saskatchewan Huskies for the second-straight night on Nov. 14. The Huskies completed their road sweep with a 78-65 win to improve to a 4-0 record, while the Vikes drop to 2-2.

Second-year guard Kristy Gallagher, who logged 22 points and four rebounds, led the Vikes. Joining her in double-digit scoring were fourth year Nicole Karstein and third year Jenna Bugiardini, logging 18 and 11 points, respectively.
 
Unlike the previous night, which was dominated by the duo of Dalyce Emmerson and Laura Dally, the Huskies had four players post double digits. First year Sabine Dukate and fifth year Kelsey Trulsrud led the team with 15 points each. Fourth year Desarae Hogberg and fifth year Laura Dally also contributed 15 and 10 points to the scoreboard, respectively.
 
"I thought somehow we came out pretty lacklustre and I'm not really sure how that happens," said Vikes women's basketball head coach Dani Sinclair. "You have an opportunity to play a team ranked in the top three in the country and down the stretch could be even higher. How often do you get that opportunity, and we didn't take advantage or really show up."
 
Saskatchewan came out swinging right off the tip off, dominating the scoreboard the entire quarter. The Huskies posted 23 points to Victoria's eight.  The Saskatchewan duo of Dukate and Trulsrud posted a total of 14 points while Giannattasio was the main contributor for the Vikes with six points.
 
The Vikes managed to slow the Saskatchewan momentum in the second quarter. Gallagher shot a basket from behind the arc followed by a steal by Karstein for another three-point play for UVic. Although, the Vikes had glimpses of offensive stride, Saskatchewan managed to maintain their lead with a 37-27 scoreline at halftime.
 
In the third, the Huskies mounted their lead to 19 points. Unlike the previous night, players from the bench demonstrated their offensive strength, with four Huskie players reaching double digits by the third quarter.
 
The Huskies continued their superiority in the final quarter of play, not allowing to the Vikes to shorten their double-digit lead. Each time the Vikes made a basket, Saskatchewan responded on the other end, allowing them to seal their double-header away sweep. Saskatchewan took the game with a final score of 78-65.
 
"I thought although that was a 13-point game I felt like we didn't play all that well and we still had a chance to be in the game at times," added Sinclair. "That's positive but you have to take advantage of that opportunity. I don't think we are playing as a team right now. Everyone cares deeply and wants the team to do well and they are giving their best but they are doing it individually and not as group."
 
The Vikes will be back at the CARSA Performance Gym next week, Nov. 20-21, to host a double-header against the Calgary Dinos. The first game is on Nov. 20 at 6:00 p.m. and will be streamed live with video and stats on pay-per-view on canadwest.tv. Next weekend's double-header will be the last regular season home games at CARSA until the season resumes in the new year.
