VICTORIA, B.C. – The University of Victoria Vikes men's basketball team finish off their 2015 Canada West play with a trip to Alberta to face the Lethbridge Pronghorns, Nov. 27-28, at the First Choice Savings Centre. The Vikes are tied with rivals the UBC Thunderbirds at the top the Canada West Pioneer Division standings with a 5-1 record, while the Pronghorns have played two less games and aret 3-1 heading into the final weekend before the winter break.
The Vikes had their five-game win streak snapped by Calgary on Nov. 21 after the No. 8 Dinos dealt the Vikes a 79-75 loss. The Vikes split the series with the Dinos after winning the first of two between the teams on Nov. 20 thanks to a free throw in the final second of play to win 72-71. Much like the Vikes, Lethbridge suffered their first loss of the season this past weekend. The Pronghorns dropped a 90-66 decision to the Regina Cougars after starting the season undefeated (3-0).
Fifth-year Vike
Mack Roth provided the late heroics from the free throw line with 0.8 seconds remaining to seal the victory on Friday for the Vikes. Roth totalled 19 points and five rebounds in the win to stretch the Vikes' then record to 5-0.
The Pronghorns are a veteran team that aren't afraid to attack the boards and challenge their opponents defensively. With no first years on their roster, Lethbridge leads the CIS in steals per game with an average of 15.5 this season and are fifth in blocks with an average of four per game. Offensively, they are in the top-three for both field goals attempted and field goals made per game.
The Vikes have utilized the veteran experience of fifth years
Brandon Dunlop,
Reiner Theil,
Grant Sitton and Roth this season as all four have been regular starters. Third-year Vike
Jordan Charles is fifth in the CIS for minutes played with 213 this season through six games, and leads all Vikes with an average of 35.5 minutes played per game.
Canada West basketball action resumes Jan. 8-9 following the holiday break. The Vikes play two exhibition games before the New Year on Dec. 29 and 31 at the CARSA Performance Gym against Simon Fraser and UBC Okanagan, respectively.
