The University of Victoria Vikes women's field hockey team ended their pre-season road trip with a 2-0 loss to Harvard on Aug. 31. The team will return with a 2-1 record after previous wins against Brown and Yale.
The Vikes came out a little slow but were able to pick up some rhythm and momentum mid-way through the opening half. The team started to find themselves in control of possession, while generating some quality scoring opportunities. Second-year midfield
Jenna Dhillon had one of the best scoring chances for the Vikes. Great midfield psasing through
Andrea Jones and
Mei Lin Cheung sprung forward
Lizzie Yates whose reverse stick cross found Dhillon's stick but the team was unable to net one.
Later, second-year Vike
Lindsay Cole took on the Harvard goalie one-on-one after a great defensive transition and counter-attack off a Harvard penalty corner. Vikes fourth-year defender
Annie Walters-Shumka quickly outletted to Yates whose long, cross ball sprung Cole for the chance that somehow didn't find the back of the net.
In the second half the Vikes seemed more comfortable moving the ball and play moved back and forth for both teams. Harvard capitalized twice in the second half leaving the Vikes with a 2-0 loss before returning home to get ready for their Canada West season, which begins at home on Sept. 19 against UBC.
