Tale of the Weekend
VICTORIA— The Vikes women's field hockey team will have a chance to book their ticket to Toronto for the CIS national championships when they host the University of Calgary Dinos this weekend.
The games on October 15 and 16 are both scheduled to start at 11:00 a.m.
With the top two teams from Canada West guaranteed a spot in the national championships, the Vikes are just one win away from clinching second place and giving themselves a chance go one better than their second place in the nation finish last year.
The Vikes and Dinos have already done battle twice this season. The Vikes won both of those games in Calgary by scores of 5-0 and 2-1.
Last Time Out
It was two close contests for UVic last weekend, but unfortunately for their hopes of defending their Canada West title, both games ended in a Vikes loss.
UBC travelled to Victoria and beat UVic 1-0 and 2-1.
Amanda Kurianowicz scored the lone Vikes goal in a weekend that was heavily affected by the weather.
"We could have had a rowing regatta on our field for the game last Saturday against UBC," said Vikes head coach
Lynne Beecroft.
Calgary will be well rested for the games, they had a bye last weekend. The last time the Dinos took to the field they too lost two games to UBC.
The Thunderbirds swept the Dinos by scores of 5-0 and 7-0.
By the Numbers
1: The Dinos have scored just one goal in their four games this season.
11: The number of years in a row that the Vikes have qualified for the CIS national tournament.
Coach's Take
Lynne Beecroft, Vikes head coach
"I think that if you play hard and to the best of your abilities, the chips will fall where they may. We'll just do what we can and do our best to deal with the weather and different conditions."
"We still have a bit to go as far as team tactics. I think we are technically fairly sound but we don't always make the best decision tactically, either on offence or defence. Over the next three weeks we need to work a lot on our decision making and recognizing that you never have to force something in our game."
Player Perspective
Jenna Dhillon, Third-year Vike
On the teams play against UBC last weekend.
"The weekend could have gone either way, it was just a few breakdowns on our part that made the difference. For the most part we went head to head with UBC and the score at the end of the day didn't really reflect how the games went."
"It's good that we dealt with the rain last weekend so we already have some experience with poor field conditions. I think we all coped really well so next weekend we should know what to expect which should make things easier on us."
"When we played Calgary it was still their first games of the season so since then they have had some time to work on some things. I think they will definitely come out strong and be good competition for us."
