Vikes win final two games at House-Laughton tournament

Oct. 15-16: Victoria Vikes 68, Western Mustangs 55 & Victoria Vikes 69, Laval Rouge et Or 61 (Ottawa, Ont.)

VICTORIA—The Vikes men's basketball team is coming away from a successful weekend on the road with two wins at the House-Laughton tournament in Ottawa. After opening up their schedule with a loss against the defending national champion Carleton Ravens, the Vikes regained some pre-season momentum by defeating both the Western Mustangs and University of Laval.

The Vikes beat the Mustangs by the decisive score of 68-55, led by fifth-year forward Grant Sitton, who put up 21 points. Justin Kinnear also chipped in with 14 points.

UVic led by only four points going into the fourth, but a huge 22 point effort in the quarter secured the victory for them.

It was Sitton and Kinnear leading the way again in the Vikes 69-61 victory over the Rouge et Or.

Laval battled back from an early Vikes lead, but a big third quarter led the Vikes to victory.

Sitton added three blocks to go with his 17 points, while Kinnear finished with 13 points. Offensive rebounding was the difference in the game, with the Vikes scoring 19 second chance points.

The Vikes finished the round-robin style tournament in second place.

UVic will have the week off before they host the Mount Royal Cougars for a pair of games on October 28 and 29. The games will be the last chance for the Vikes to fine-tune their play before the start of meaningful basketball.

The Canada West regular season gets underway with the Vikes on the road in Regina, November 4 and 5.
