VICTORIA—
Grant Sitton scored 24 points in just 24 minutes on the court to help the UVic Vikes defeat the visiting Mount Royal Cougars by a score of 80-72 on October 28.
BOX SCORE
In a game filled with fouls, the Vikes took the lead on the first shot of the game and never surrendered it. The visiting Cougars made UVic work for the win though, the largest lead of the game was just twelve points.
Third-year forward
Justin Kinnear finished with 19 points and nine rebounds, while first-year guard
Scott Kellum shot 77 per cent in the game to score ten points.
Brett Layton was a force inside for Mount Royal. The second-year player almost recorded a triple-double with 22 points, 15 rebounds and seven blocks.
The big difference in the game was in the way the teams shot the ball from beyond the arc. UVic went 5-for-14 to shoot 35 per cent while the Cougars went just 1-for-13 to finish the game with a 7 per cent three-point shooting percentage.
Hassan Abdullahi and
Wayne Tucker Jr. were effective defensively for UVic. They each recorded two steals and were challenging shots all game long.
There were a staggering 50 fouls committed between the two teams in the contest. Three Mount Royal players fouled out of the game and three Vikes were just one call away from being forced into an early exit.
A positive to be drawn from the high number of fouls is that the teams got an opportunity to play a lot of players. Nine different Vikes played over 15 minutes in the game as the team continues to build toward the start of the regular season.
The Vikes will wrap up their preseason tomorrow when these same two teams meet again at the CARSA Performance Gym. The game is scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. start.
