Hedlin, Hanus cap off successful Canada West Championships with silver medals

Nov. 25-27: Canada West Swimming Championships (Edmonton, AB)

VICTORIA - Danielle Hanus and Eric Hedlin both added a silver to their medal haul on Sunday as the University of Victoria Vikes men and women closed out the Canada West Swimming Championships ranked fourth in the overall standings.

FULL RESULTS

Hanus took home silver in the 100-metre backstroke, coming second to UBC's Ingrid Wilm in the A Final. The rookie Vike broke a Canada West record in preliminaries only to see Wilm break hers minutes later. For her efforts, Hanus was named a Canada West Second Team All-Star.

Hedlin was also named a Canada West All-Star, named to the First Team after winning gold on Day 1 and relay bronze on Day 2. The second-year Vike won silver in the 400-metre freestyle on Sunday, finishing with a time of 3:50.58 behind only UBC's Keegan Zanatta.

In total, the Vikes finished with 12 top-eight finishers on Day 3, a total that includes both the men's and women's 4x100-metre individual medley relay teams, both of whom closed out their A Finals in fourth.

Also earning a fourth-place finish on Day 3 was Jon McKay, who just missed the podium in the 400-metre freestyle. Kaitlin Gervais and Eric Hedlin both finished fifth in the 400-metre freestyle and 200-metre individual medley, respectively, while Justin Schramm qualified for the U Sports Championships with a sixth-place finish in the 200-metre butterfly.

Victoria Mock, Brett Zollen, Aidan Thirkell and Bailey Espersen were the Vikes' other top-ten finishers. Mock finished seventh in the 200-metre butterfly and eighth in the 400-metre freestyle; Zollen finished seventh in the 200-metre individual medley; Thirkell finished eighth in the 200-metre breaststroke; and Bailey Espersen finished sixth in the 200-metre breaststroke.

Espersen barely missed out on his first U Sports cut in the 200-metre breaststroke by 0.08 seconds.  The Smithers, B.C., native has taken eight seconds off his 200-metre breaststroke time from the start of the year, and will look to qualify for nationals next weekend at the Christmas Cracker swim meet in Victoria.

That meet will take place on December 2nd, and will mark the Vikes final official competition before the holiday break.
