Vikes men win Keg Spring Cup, women finish second

Mar. 19-20: Annual Keg Cup (Centennial Stadium)

VICTORIA, B.C. – The University of Victoria Vikes men's soccer team won both of their games over the weekend to take first place at the Keg Spring Cup, hosted at Centennial Stadium from March 19-20, while the women's team made it to the finals before falling to Trinity Western.

The annual event features four men's and four women's teams, all of whom get treated to a steak dinner at the local Keg Restaurant courtesy of long-time Vikes supporter John Tinker. Trinity Western, UBC, and Alberta joined the Vikes on the women's side while Fraser Valley, UBC and Trinity Western rounded out the competition for the men.

Both of UVic's teams went undefeated on day one to earn a spot in the finals on Sunday, as the men's team defeated Trinity Western 3-1 while the women's team shut out Alberta 3-0. They were joined in the championship game by Fraser Valley in men's play and Trinity Western on the women's side.

Trinity Western struck early in the women's final on Sunday, scoring just over a minute in to put the Vikes on their heels and adding another early in the second half. Victoria fought back with a goal from Teresa Anania late in the game but they never truly recovered, losing by a score of 2-1. In consolation play, Alberta defeated UBC to claim a third-place finish.

It was a different story for the Vikes in the men's final, as they were able to bounce back from an early Cascades' goal to score two unanswered. The winning goal came off a corner in the 61st minute, helping to end a long drought for the Vikes in the annual tournament. Meanwhile, UBC and Trinity Western played to a scoreless tie in consolation action to share third place.
