Growing pains for young Vikes as they lose to McGill

Sep. 30: Victoria Vikes 44, McGill Redmen 69 (CARSA Performance Gym, Victoria, B.C.) | Cameron Doherty, Vikes Communications

VICTORIA—The Vikes men's basketball team couldn't conjure up another second-half come back in the Guy Vetrie Memorial Tournament. They lost to the McGill Redmen 69-44 on September 30.

"I thought we played a good McGill team tonight. They're a veteran team and we just plain got outclassed a little bit tonight to be honest," said Vikes head coach Craig Beaucamp. "We have a young team, there's going to be some growing pains and tonight was one of those nights."

McGill, who qualified for the CIS national championships last season, came out and took control of the game right from the beginning. They outscored the Vikes 19-6 in the first quarter.

The Vikes battled back in the second quarter, led by third-year forward Jake Newman.

"He was one guy that competed and got after it a little bit tonight. There are not a lot of positives from tonight, but he was a guy that stepped up for us," said Beaucamp.

McGill came out in the second half and quickly reasserted their lead, scoring 21 points in the quarter. The Redmen were led by Noah Daoust and Dele Ogundokun who each scored 14 points in the game.

The Vikes tried their hardest to work their way back into the game in fourth quarter, but it was a case of too little too late.

"It's not just about competing, its about playing smart. Tonight we saw some things that we didn't react to very well and offensively we aren't really in sync right now and that showed," said Beaucamp.

Both teams will be back in action, tomorrow, October 1.

The Redmen will take on the Regina Cougars at 5:00 p.m. in the CARSA Performance Gym.

The Vikes meanwhile, will finish their Guy Vetrie schedule with a game against the McMaster Marauders at 7:00 p.m. in the CARSA Performance Gym.
