Day leads the way for Vikes in comeback victory

Nov. 4: UVic Vikes 84, Brandon Bobcats 80 (Brandon, MB)

VICTORIA – The University of Victoria Vikes women's basketball team will leave the province of Manitoba with a clean sweep of the Brandon Bobcats after they outscored Brandon by 14 points in the fourth quarter to win 84-80 on Nov. 4.

"We have to be happy with the resiliency of our group to be able to do that against a really good, veteran team in Brandon," said Vikes head coach Dani Sinclair of the come from behind win. "There is still a lot of stuff that we need to work on, but for tonight we have to be happy with the result."

First-year Vike Ashlyn Day continues to impress as the guard from Kelowna, B.C. poured in a game-high 26 points on the night, going 10-for-15 from the field.

"She is a pretty special player, she is understated, doesn't force anything and is a great team player," said Sinclair of Day. "Tonight she took the opportunities when they came offensively and then also created some stuff defensively with some timely steals."

Ten of Day's 26 points came in the final quarter of play as the Vikes erased a ten-point deficit in the final frame en route to the victory.

"As she goes along she is just going to continue to get better and better," said Sinclair. "As good as she is I think she understands that she is going to continue to grow and she has great support from her teammates, it's been fun to watch her come in and be so comfortable right away."

Third-year forward Marissa Dheensaw picked up a double-double on the night with 14 points, ten rebounds and three assists. Amira Giannattasio rounded out the top-scorers for the Vikes with 12 points in her 34 minutes of action.

After allowing the Bobcats to record 70 points through just three quarter of action the Vikes defence stepped up when the team needed it the most, limiting Brandon to just ten points in the final frame.

"Not overall, but in the fourth quarter it did," said Sinclair when asked if her defence improved from the night before. "Our defence was very timely, but overall we need to get back to work to be more solid defensively."

With the sweep of the Bobcats coming by just 11 points over the two games the team played, a young Vikes squad has proven that it has what it takes to gut out close games in what promises to be an extremely tight Canada West conference.

The victory keeps the Vikes perfect on the year as the team has won all four of their regular season games. That record will be on the line next weekend when the Vikes travel to Langley to take on the Trinity Western Spartans on Nov. 10 and 11.

Both of those games can be watched live on canadawest.tv.
