VICTORIA – A dominant 2-0 win over the Trinity Western Spartans capped off a perfect weekend for the UVic Vikes women's soccer team, as they won the Keg Spring Cup tournament hosted at Centennial Stadium on March 18-19.
The Vikes women struck early in the championship game when a cross from
Emily Lieuwen took a deflection off a Trinity Western defender and the ball found it's way into the net past a helpless Spartans goalkeeper.
Before 30 minutes had elapsed the Vikes doubled their lead thanks to a long-range effort from
Georgia Bignold that the Spartans goalie was unable to keep from squeezing underneath her.
A stellar Vikes defence did the rest of the work, limiting Trinity Western to just a few scoring chances to help goalkeeper
Meaghan Storie record the shutout.
Booking their ticket to the finals with a 3-0 win over the Alberta Pandas on the 18, UVic scored five goals and allowed none over their two games, a testament to the strong defence that the team has shown throughout the 2016-17 season.
The Vikes men had a more difficult time at the tournament, finishing in a tie for third place after recording two ties in their two games.
In their consolation game the Vikes jumped out to a lead over the 2016 Canada West runners-up UBC T-Birds just after halftime, when
Xavier Araujo unleashed a perfectly placed free-kick into the top corner.
An equalizer from UBC with ten minutes left to play didn't faze the Vikes, who leapt back in front after
Mackenzie Rigg scored from the penalty spot with just five minutes left in the game.
Disaster struck in the final minute of play however: a UBC was player was judged to have been pulled down inside the 18-yard box, allowing the T-Birds to slot home the penalty shot and finish the game in a tie.
It was the second game in a row that the Vikes fell victim to a late penalty call. They led their semi final game on the 18 against the University of the Fraser Valley 1-0 until a penalty call went against them, again in the final minute of play. Fraser Valley would go on to win the game in the penalty-shootout.
