Outside shooting pays off as Vikes down Thompson Rivers

Nov. 9: Victoria Vikes 73, Thompson Rivers 65 (Kamloops, B.C.)

VICTORIA – Three Vikes scored in double digits as the University of Victoria men's basketball team secured a 73-65 win over the Thompson Rivers WolfPack on Nov. 9 in Kamloops, B.C. The Vikes out-scored Thompson Rivers 37-24 in the final two frames to improve to a 2-3 record, while the WolfPack fall to 1-2.
 
Fifth-year Vikes guard Jordan Charles led his side in scoring with 20 points in 38 minutes played. Taylor Montgomery-Stinson had 19 points, while fifth year Mason Loewen had 15 points and seven rebounds. The Vikes trio of double-digit scorers put up 11 of the team's 13 three-pointers and Montgomery-Stinson had five attributed to his name. Senior Jake Newman led defensively with 12 rebounds.
 
The home side had four players in double-digit scoring and led 41-36 at half time. Fourth year Enrico Nuno had a double-double of 22 points and 10 rebounds, while team mate Anton Bilous added 12 points. Yonathan Micheal and Joe Davis had 12 and 11 points, respectively. Twenty-two points for the WolfPack came from their bench.
 
Both teams were on pace through the opening quarter as Thompson Rivers nabbed a 22-20 lead heading into the first break. Loewen had seven of those first-quarter points, while the WolfPak had a 10-point opening quarter from Bilous.
 
In the second, the Vikes started to see their outside shooting drop as Montgomery-Stinson, Charles, Loewen and Scott Kellum each saw a three drop but the Vikes still trailed 41-36 at half.
 
Charles had a 14-point performance in the third quarter finishing on both attempts from distance as the Vikes out-scored the WolfPack 58-50.
 
In the final quarter Montgomery-Stinson exploded to push the Vikes out of distance. A three pointer early in the quarter lifted the Vikes 64-56. The fourth year had two three pointers and finished the quarter with 10 points to help the Vikes secure the 73-65 win.
 
The teams will rematch tomorrow, Nov. 10, at 7:00 p.m. in Kamloops, B.C. The game will be available live on pay-per-view at canadawest.tv. SCORING SUMMARY
