VICTORIA – The University of Victoria Vikes now control their own destiny after sweeping a weekend set over the University of Calgary Dinos.
The Vikes polished off the Dinos with a 2-1 decision on Sunday morning at the UVic Field Hockey Turf.
With the win, the Vikes (3-0-3) move into first place in the conference with one weekend to play.
"The driver's seat is a nice spot to be in, but we still have a lot of work to do and a few sets to put in place this week before we take on UBC," said Vikes Assistant Coach
Krista Thompson.
The Vikes opened the match when
Georgia Booker made a couple nice moves to work her way up the field. She set up
Ashton Aumen, but the Duncan, B.C. product's shot sailed wide.
Booker was back in action in the 10
th minute following a Vikes penalty corner.
Janet Dawson took the corner and found
Anna Mollenhauer. The defender's shot was deflected in by Booker for the 1-0 advantage.
The Vikes used the deflection play again in the second quarter when a strike from Aumen found
Janet Dawson on the back post for the chip in during the 23
rd minute.
"We don't always get our sticks on corners like that and Janet has the ability to knock anything out of midair," said Thompson. "Deflecting balls is something the kids always work on and it's nice to see them go in."
Even though the Dinos (0-5-3) were playing their final game of the season, they didn't fade away.
A stretch pass the length of the field by Jenna Birch-Jones set up Lauren Hayes in tight, but she was turned away by the left foot of Vikes keeper
Robin Fleming.
"Calgary left everything on the field today. They played a different structure, the pressed us and put us under pressure right from the start. That was they best they had played us at any point this season," said Thompson.
Fleming looked sharp once again, as she went into the splits to kick out Jennifer Wishart's shot off a third consecutive corner by the Dinos.
Tayler Guy was still called upon to make big saves for the Dinos to keep it close.
She booted out a backhanded rocket by
Cara Butler with two minutes before halftime.
The Dinos ended Fleming's four-game shutout streak seconds before halftime.
Rewarded with a corner, Hayes saw her initial strike tipped in by Nicole Brown, who moved into a tie for the conference lead in goals with three.
Guy got some help from her teammates in the second half when Madison MacMillan pulled a backdoor play off the goal line with three minutes remaining in the third.
Dinos Head Coach Roel Van Maastrigt left no stone uncovered in the fourth as he pulled his goalie for two minutes in the 40
th minute following a green card to
Justine Balen. He also lifted Guy with six minutes remaining to put more pressure on the Vikes but couldn't scratch out their first win of the season.
The Vikes wrap up the regular season next weekend when they host the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds. Game time on Saturday and Sunday is slated for 11 a.m.
