Vikes earn draw during season opener in Calgary

Leina Dueck crashes into Dinos keeper.
CALGARY – Some late-game heroics from team captain Jenna Birch-Jones helped push the University of Calgary women's field hockey team to a 2-2 draw against the University of Victoria Vikes on Saturday afternoon at Hawkings Field.

The game started off at a fairly slow pace, with most of the play coming in the neutral zone. The pace picked up halfway through the opening frame when Victoria found a clear spark and tested Calgary 'keeper Taylor Guy on multiple occasions to no avail.

The second quarter was much of the same with the Vikes dominating offensively. Guy was forced into action to make a diving save in the first minute, her best of the day so far.

"Taylor was phenomenal today," Dinos Head Coach Roel Van Maastrigt spoke of his goalie's performance. "She's from Victoria so this game meant a lot to her."

Despite the Vikes' clear advantage, the Dinos defence was able to stave off the attacks to keep the game scoreless going into halftime.

The game finally saw its first goal in the third coming off a short corner for the Vikes. Rookie Melanie Robertson spotted a clear path to the net and fired one home to the right of Guy to give Victoria the lead.

Despite putting some pressure on the Vikes defense, the Dinos were unable to muster anything in the quarter to respond but looked menacing heading into the final frame.

In the dying moments of the fourth, a crazy sequence of events led the final result. It started when the Dinos pulled Guy for an extra attacker, leading to the Vikes' second goal when Anna Mollenauer fired it into the empty net in the 57th minute.

Calgary kept Guy on the bench trailing by two, and the Dinos were rewarded when Abigail Fung fired one home to bring her team back within one, with very little time left to get another.

The last chance for the Dinos to get back even came on a short corner with just seconds left on the clock. Jenna Bower swept the ball to a loaded up Jenna Birch-Jones, who fired a rocket along the ground and through Robin Flemming to end the game in a 2-2 draw.

Calgary improves to 0-2-1 on the season with the result, with Victoria opening their campaign at 0-0-1.

The two teams will do battle again tomorrow at Hawkings Field as the game is set to get underway at 11 a.m. MT.
