Langdon bounces back in big way in sweep over WolfPack

VICTORIA – The University of Victoria Vikes completed the weekend sweep of the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack 79-59 on Saturday night at the CARSA Performance Gym.

Ken and Kathy Shields Court transformed from its regular blue and gold surroundings to a pink arena, as the Vikes hosted the 13th annual Shoot For The Cure Game in support of the Canadian Cancer Society.

"That felt good tonight. It was a good win in front of a good crowd and we needed this weekend after the tough stretch we just went through," said Vikes Head Coach Dani Sinclair.

Vikes forward Katie Langdon is going to want to play in the commemorative pink jerseys more often. She led the Vikes on a 6-0 run in the second with her patience, footwork and finish around the rim. She bounced back from a scoreless performance last night with 12 in the first half.

The fifth-year forward kept rolling in the second half and took advantage of the younger Jordan Robb, who is working through her freshman tour with the 'Pack. The Owen Sound product attacked the glass and used body position to end her evening with a season best 20 points.

"How you perform in back-to-backs is what this league is about. Each game is so different. You got to be ready for teams to adjust to you, sometimes you to forget a tough night and adjust back," said Sinclair. "We didn't call anything different for Katie, maybe she just wanted to come out and prove something to herself tonight."

Robb had it working early, though. The Vikes (9-7) didn't have an answer for the Kelowna native, as she scored the WolfPack's first nine points. She also stretched the defence by dialing up a pair of triples for 13 first half points. She ended her evening with 16 points on 10 shots.

Morgan Roskelley erased an early and small deficit with a four trays in the first half, one from each wing and a pair from the left corner. She added three more in the fourth quarter to give her a season-high in makes (7) and points (21).

Last night, Leilani Carney canned four triples on 10 shots. She continued her sharpshooting this evening and drilled a pair of three-pointers in the first half. The fifth-year guard added a layup and a pair of free throws to finish with 13 points.

"Every defensive possession with TRU is a battle with the way they can space the floor and shoot. I'm proud of our girls for the way they played this weekend," said Sinclair.

After only scoring six points in 20 minutes for the Vikes last night, Tana Pankratz bounced back with 11 points in 31 minutes on six shots. She recorded the first double-double of her career after she yanked down 11 boards. Marissa Dheensaw tied Pankratz for the team lead with 11 rebounds.

As the WolfPack keyed on Langdon later on, Aleah Ashlee found space down low and poured in 11 points of her own and added seven rebounds.

Like they did in the second quarter last night, the Vikes locked down the WolfPack (7-9) in the third frame and only allowed 11 points while they opened up a 15-0 run. The Vikes won the rebounding battle 45-26.

The Vikes conclude the home half of their regular season slate when they host the University of Manitoba Bisons (7-9) at the CARSA Performance Gym. The WolfPack return to the Tournament Capital Centre next weekend to host the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades (12-4).
