Week five recap at UBCO

Vikes claim third-straight win with Friday night victory over UBCO

Kelowna, B.C. – Entering the game holding the top spot in the Canada West west division standings and with a No. 9 ranking by U SPORTS, the University of Victoria men's soccer team did their best to stay in that spot, posting a 1-0 win over UBCO, Oct. 15.

HOW IT HAPPENED
62nd Minute – UVic 1, UBCO 0
  • After coming close on chances earlier in the game, Ian Whibley converted on a ball from Isaac Koch for the game-winner, his fourth of the season.
WORTH NOTING
  • Of their 17 total shots on the night, the Vikes managed to put 11 of those on target.
  • Harjot Nijjar tallied five saves in the shutout, his third of the season.
  • Whibley totaled four shots on the night, all four of which were on target, leading all players in the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
54th Minute – UBCO 1, UVic 0
  • After a scoreless first half, UBCO got on the board first with a goal in the opening third of the second half.
WORTH NOTING
  • Like the game prior, Ian Whibley saw a slew of scoring chances in the first half, including a header right in front of the UBCO goalkeeper in the 24th minute that the Heat keeper managed to get a hand on and save.
  • Whibley and Isaac Koch tied for the Victoria team lead in shots taken, with four each, with both also putting two of those shots on goal.
  • The Vikes move to an overall record of 5-2-3. Currently holding the top spot in the Canada West west division standings, the UVic awaits the results from the rest of the conference today to see where they sit.

The Vikes will close out the regular season hosting UBC, Oct. 22-23, at Centennial Stadium.
