Vikes clinch top spot in postseason play with win over UBC

VICTORIA - The University of Victoria men's soccer team clinched the Canada West west division crown with a 2-0 win over the University of British Columbia, Oct. 22 at Centennial Stadium.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
6th Minute – UVic 1, UBC 0
  • Awarded the first corner kick of the game, Isaac Koch's kick in went off the crossbar, however, it remained in play and found Evan Libke, who managed to send it to the back of the net for the early Vikes lead.
35th Minute – UVic 2, UBC 0
  • Playing a through ball, Koch managed to out-paced his defender, netting a tidy finish to the bottom left of the goal for the 2-0 lead.
WORTH NOTING
  • Of his two shots on the night, Libke was able to put both on target.
  • Both sides finished relatively even in shots taken, with Victoria holding the slight 13-to-11 advantage in total shots, as well as 6-to-4 edge in shots on goal.
  • Both goalkeepers finished with four saves on the night.
  • The Vikes' 6-1-3 record solidified them as the top seed for the upcoming Canada West postseason tournament.

VICTORIA - In their final regular season game of 2021, the University of Victoria men's soccer team fell to the University of British Columbia, 4-0, Oct. 23 at Centennial Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
3rd Minute – UBC 1, UVic 0
  • Capitalizing on their first corner of the game, UBC was able to slip a header past Jared Perras for the lead.
7th Minute – UBC 2, UVic 0
  • On a quick takeaway from the Vikes, UBC broke away to take the UVic goalkeeper one-on-one and score.
9th Minute – UBC 3, UVic 0
  • Adding to their lead two minutes later, the Thunderbirds would get a wide-open look inside the penalty box and take full advantage, notching their third goal of the game.
90th+ Minute – UBC 4, UVic 0
  • Just seconds in to the additional time added by the refs, UBC found a man wide open at the top of box, ready for the pass to bury the final Thunderbirds' goal of the night.
WORTH NOTING
  • The Vikes finish the regular season with a 6-2-3 overall record, having secured the top spot in the Canada West west division standings.
  • Perras made his first career start for the Vikes, picking up one save.
  • UVic was held to just four shots on the night.
