Early goal pushes Heat past Vikes

Kelowna, B.C. - A first-half strike from UBCO proved enough to hand the University of Victoria a 1-0 setback in its first-of-two games against the Heat, Oct. 15 at Nonis Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
33rd Minute – UBCO 1, UVic 0
  • Awarded a free kick just outside the box on the left side, the Heat launched a shot to the back of the net to take the lead.
WORTH NOTING
  • In the 67th minute, Victoria nearly had an opportunity to tie, intercepting a Heat pass in the box with their goalkeeper out of position. While the UBCO keeper was able to deflect the first shot, Trinity Kettyls found the ball, but her follow-up shot was saved by the Heat defender.
  • The Vikes out-shot the Heat, 11-to-4, and also held a 9-to-2 advantage in shots on goal.
  • Kettyls and Eryn Libert-Scott led the offensive attack for Victoria, tallying four (three on target) and three (two on target) shots, respectively.
  • UVic forced the UBCO goalkeeper to nine saves on the day.

Kelowna, B.C. - The University of Victoria women's soccer team dropped its final contest of the series, 4-0, to UBCO at Nonis Field, Oct. 16.

HOW IT HAPPENED
17th Minute – UBCO 1, UVic 0
  • UBCO got on the board first, aided by a deflection to take the 1-0 lead.
61st Minute – UBCO 2, UVic 0
  • Adding to their lead in the second half, the Heat broke away from the Vikes' defence to net a second.
62nd Minute – UBCO 3, UVic 0
  • Getting the ball back from the Vikes, UBCO drove down the field to score their third.
74th Minute – UBCO 4, UVic 0
  • Running away with it, the Heat added one final goal in the second half.
WORTH NOTING
  • Nikki Virk and Kyra Teetzen each saw scoring chances for the Vikes, but were met with saves by the UBCO goalkeeper. Both Virk and Teetzen finished with two shots (one on target) for the day.
  • UVic and UBCO finished tied in shots taken at eight, with UBCO ending with a 5-to-2 shots on target advantage. 
  • The Vikes end the weekend with a record of 4-4-2.
UP NEXT
The Vikes will host UBC at Centennial Stadium, Oct. 22-23, for the final regular season series of the season.
