Men's Rugby clinches national championship berth with win over TWU

VICTORIA - Claiming their first win of the season, the University of Victoria men's rugby team defeated Trinity Western University, 36-25, Oct. 23 at Wallace Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED 
2nd Minute - UVic 5, TWU 0
  • Jumping out to an early lead, Ethan Hager scored the first try of the match for the Vikes.
9th Minute - TWU 7, UVic 5
  • Finding a response in the opening 10 minutes, Trinity Western scored the try and conversion to take their only lead of the game.
14th Minute - TWU 10, UVic 5
  • A penalty goal by the Spartans added three points to their lead.
18th Minute - UVic 12, TWU 10 32nd Minute - UVic 19, TWU 10
  • Carter White added one more try for the Vikes before the end of the first half, and Gamage added another two points with his second successful conversion of the day.
43rd Minute - UVic 26, TWU 10
  • Pulling away at the start of the second half, Jonas Robinson recorded the try and Gamage added a conversion to extend the Vikes' lead.
45th Minute - UVic 33, TWU 10
  • Ayo Ogunlade broke through to the in-goal area, picking up his first try of the match. Gamage was successful on his conversion attempt for the fourth time.
62nd Minute - UVic 33, TWU 17
  • TWU put a stop to the Vikes' scoring run with a try and conversion.
64th Minute - UVic 33, TWU 22
  • Continuing a scoring run of their own, the Spartans cut in to the Vikes' lead with a try with just over 15 minutes to go in the match.
75th Minute - UVic 33, TWU 25
  • TWU put their final points on the board via penalty goal in the final minutes of play.
80th Minute - UVic 36, TWU 25
  • In the final minute, Gamage scored a penalty goal to seal the Vikes' win.
WORTH NOTING
  • With the win, the Vikes claim their first win of the season, as well as secure a spot in the Canadian University Men's Rugby Championship next month.
  • Five different Vikes scored tries in the win, while Gamage scored four conversions and one penalty goal for UVic.
  • The 36 points were the most scored by the Vikes so far this season, after previously reaching a high of 22 points, twice.
